Iran to adopt countermeasures as United States revokes sanctions waivers

Iran to announce partial withdrawal from nuclear deal — Reports

The Iranian minister said Tehran's actions came in response to the USA withdrawal from the deal, and were not meant to destroy the agreement.

According to Russian Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Tehran's backtracking on the agreement was due to external pressure.

"After a year of patience, Iran stops measures that (the) U.S. has made impossible to continue, " he tweeted.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is said to be planning a speech Wednesday on the anniversary to discuss the next steps Tehran will take in confronting the U.S. Officials in the Islamic Republic previously warned that Iran might increase its uranium enrichment, potentially pulling away from a deal it has sought to salvage for months.

While visiting Finland, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Iran has "threatened many things over the last two years". Ultimate authority in Iran is in the hands of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, a cleric in power since 1989, who signed off on the nuclear deal but remains close to the hardline faction that challenges Rouhani.

Washington announced the deployment of an aircraft carrier to the Gulf to counter what it says are Iranian threats.

USA officials have spoken in recent days of intelligence suggesting a military threat from Iran, although they have not given specific details.

The 2015 deal saw sanctions on Iran lifted in exchange for limits on its nuclear program.

Rouhani also said that if the 60 days pass without action, Iran will halt a Chinese-led effort to redesign its Arak heavy water nuclear reactor.

Iran has continued complying with the deal.

Mr Rouhani also said any referral to the United Nations Security Council would be met with a "firm response", without specifying what this would entail - while stressing Tehran's willingness to negotiate.

Under the deal, Iran agreed to rein in its nuclear activities in return for an easing of sanctions. However, their efforts have largely failed, with all major European companies abandoning plans to do business with Iran for fear of US punishment.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the move was in response to "new intelligence that suggests allied interests and American forces could be imperiled", according to multiple US officials.

In response to the United States ending the sanctions waivers, Iran repeated threats to block the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical passageway for the world's oil exports.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran does not at the current stage consider itself committed to observing restrictions regarding storing enriched uranium stocks and heavy water stocks", the council said. He added, "We will continue enrichment whether you want to purchase it or not", referring to the arrangement in which Iran exports low-enriched uranium in exchange for natural uranium.

However, once a country enriches uranium to around 20 per cent, scientists say the time needed to reach 90 per cent is halved.

It suggested in its Tuesday edition that Iran may install advanced centrifuges at its Natanz facility and begin enrichment at its Fordo facility, activities prohibited under the nuclear deal. The Stuxnet computer virus, widely believed to be a joint U.S.
