100 arrested at London climate protests

Environmental activists block central London roads

Police in London have arrested more than 200 people as climate protesters brought parts of the United Kingdom capital to a standstill for a second day running.

On Monday morning, a group of demonstrators with trees, plants and solar panels in tow barricaded Waterloo Bridge, one of five locations being targeted by environmental campaigners in the city as part of the protest.

Police confirmed that a total of 113 arrests had been made at the Extinction Rebellion protest, the majority of which were for breach of the public order act or obstruction of the road.

The arrest figure includes three men and two women who were detained at the United Kingdom offices of energy giant Royal Dutch Shell on suspicion of criminal damage.

Transport for London warned bus users that routes would remain on diversion or terminate early.

The group has called on the United Kingdom government to reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2025 and establish a citizens' assembly to devise an emergency plan of action to tackle climate breakdown and biodiversity loss.

"The information and intelligence available at this time means that that Met (police) feels this action is necessary in order to prevent the demonstrations from causing ongoing serious disruption", the police said.

Shots fired by police after incident near Ukraine Embassy in London
The Ukrainian Embassy did not confirm if anyone was inside the ambassador's vehicle at the time but confirmed no one was injured. TV footage later showed a silver vehicle slewed across the cordoned-off road with its driver's door open and window shattered.

Police on the bridge said there were no plans to move protesters on but indicated that the response could change if there is major disruption at rush hour.

"The idea is that if people are arrested others step in and take their place".

The protests, called by British climate organisation Extinction Rebellion, are expected to last for a week at least across 80 cities in more than 33 countries.

Four activists chained and glued themselves underneath a lorry parked on Waterloo Bridge, where they slept on Monday night.

Protester Olivia Evershed, 23, said: "I hope that it's really going to bring awareness about the emergency crisis that we are in, and encourage the government to act".

The demonstration, which XR describes as non-violent civil disobedience, comes on the back of similar action in November that saw thousands of protesters occupy five bridges in central London. Instead we demand a Citizens' Assembly to oversee the changes, as we rise from the wreckage, creating a democracy fit for goal.

"We wish to make peace with ourselves by making peace with our neighbour Earth and with our God", he said.
