Boy thrown from Mall of America balcony still hospitalized

Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda thegrio

A five-year old boy was rushed to the hospital Friday morning after police said a man threw him from a balcony on the third floor.

'Additional information from witnesses indicated the 5-year-old might have been pushed or thrown, ' Bloomington Chief of Police Jeff Potts said.

"I heard the mother screaming pray for my kid. please pray for my son. everyone please pray", said Brian Johnson, witness.

"She was screaming, 'Everyone pray, everyone pray".

It has been reported that Landen Hoffmann from Woodbury, Minnesota, was tossed to the marble ground beneath the balcony on Friday (12 April) as his mum screamed: "Oh my God, my baby - someone threw him over the edge".

Emmanuel Aranda, 24, was arrested in the mall's transit station after running away from the scene.

Aranda has been involved in incidents before at the Mall of America, one resulting in an arrest, Potts said. Potts said there is no relationship between the suspect and the child or the child's family, and investigators are working to determine why the man threw the boy.

"We don't believe that there is a threat to the public at this point as the suspect has been located", he said, adding that the incident appeared to be isolated. Police said Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, 24, picked the boy at random and threw him over the balcony.

'This was a senseless act and words can not truly express our profound shock and sadness, ' the Mall of America said in a statement on Friday.

Potts said he expects to turn the case over to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office on Monday for a decision on formal charges.

The Tribune also notes that "Court records show that Aranda has a history of convictions for misdemeanor offense. Bloomington Police is investigating the incident", it said.

In a statement Friday afternoon, the mall's management acknowledged the incident.

Aranda was under a trespass notice at the time banning him from the mall until July 4, 2016.

Court records obtained by PEOPLE show that Aranda pleaded guilty to the charge of first-degree property damage and was sentenced to serve 28 days in prison, pay restitution and undergo anger management training.

According to the complaint, Aranda repeatedly asked a woman to buy him "something to eat or at least give him some money", and after being asked to leave by a restaurant employee, he allegedly grabbed full glasses of ice water and tea, throwing them at the woman.
