Deadly, Drug Resistant Fungus Could Be Next Global Threat

This Fungal Infection is Drug-Resistant Can Kill You in 90 Days and Has Spread Worldwide- WORLD OF BUZZ

The state's number of cases - now the third-highest after NY and IL - has risen in tandem with an increase, first overseas, and now in the United States, in a trend that some doctors attribute to the overuse of drugs to treat infections, prompting the mutation of infection sources, in this case, a fungus.

CBS New York reports an elderly man died from the fungus a year ago at Mount Sinai Hospital following abdominal surgery. Since then, the fungus has spread not just to the United States, but also numerous other countries, including Colombia, India, and South Korea, according to the CDC.

'In New York and New Jersey, cases were identified in multiple acute care hospitals, but further investigation found most had overlapping stays at interconnected long-term care facilities and acute care hospitals within a limited geographic area.

The CDC says the yeast can enter the bloodstream and spread through the body, causing invasive infections.

It's part of a surge of infections contracted in healthcare facilities that have become immune to antibiotics.

Candida auris, according to the The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), typically, is more likely to infect those who already have weakened immune systems, such as those who are already hospitalized or have an autoimmune disease. Results of the study published in 2014 in Intensive Care Medicine, a medical journal, show 6.51% patients admitted during the study period - April 2011 to September 2012 - suffered from fungal infection.

How is Candida auris spread? However, he adds, "While I see C.auris about once a month, I have seen people dying of multi-drug resistant bacteria daily".

"Most strains of C. auris are resistant to at least one antifungal drug, one-third are resistant to two antifungal drug classes, and some strains are resistant to all three major classes of antifungal drugs".

Ogunbowale, the hero from previous year , missed a key free throw with 1.9 seconds left. "It's tough", Ogunbowale told reporters . The Baylor Bears are back at the top of the sport with their Sunday win in the women's college basketball national title game.

Candida auris, a harmful form of yeast, is resistant to most drugs, with a 60 percent mortality rate.

Candida auris can be challenging to identify because the symptoms are so similar to the flu or common cold that testing for the fungus is often overlooked.

Some C. auris infections have been resistant to all three main classes of antifungal medications, making them hard to treat.

The fungus has been found on surfaces in hospital rooms and on the skin of nurses and patients - even after patients were treated with antifungal medications. Fisher co-authored a recent scientific review documenting the rise of drug-resistant fungi.

Many of these patients had other serious illnesses which likely contributed to the deaths, she said.

"In the fungal world, C.auris is a bad bug", says Dr Abdul Ghafur, Coordinator with the Chennai Declaration on AMR.

Healthcare institutions here have measures in place to prevent and control healthcare-related infections, including C. auris, and are required to report any outbreaks, but no outbreak was reported, the spokesman said.
