SAT debris will decay within 45 days, says DRDO chief

The Pic of the Day Air Force Col. Nick Hague takes a stroll outside the ISS

The letter comes days after NASA chief Bridenstine in a town hall meeting criticised India's anti-satellite missile (ASAT) test because of the debris is generated in the space and its potential threat to the International Space Station. A-SAT test was deliberately done at below 300 km to ensure debris decay fast.

He also clarified that a test done on 12 February was not an ASAT test, but a ballistic missile that was used to take out an electronic target - in response to media reports that the 12 February test was also an ASAT test that failed.

India insisted on Saturday that debris from its anti-satellite missile test was not a danger to the International Space Station (ISS), in a rebuff to criticism from the United States space agency.

India shot down one of its satellites in space on March 27 with an anti-satellite (A-SAT) missile to demonstrate this complex capability, joining the elite club of countries - the US, Russia and China - which have such capabilities.

"That is a awful, bad thing to create an event that sends debris and an apogee that goes above the International Space Station".

"NASA chief administrator said that there is a risk for 10 days and we have already crossed the 10 days since Mission Shakti".

Letters: Pie in the sky - and a poke in the eye
Another judge on Wednesday struck down efforts in Kentucky and Arkansas to place work requirements on some Medicaid enrollees. District Court Judge John Bates said that the move let those involved "avoid the most stringent requirements of the ACA".

Reddy said the simulation studies show all debris of the Indian A-SAT test would decay in 45 days. "As part of our partnership with you, we will continue to work on issues using the NASA-ISRO Human Space Flight Working Group, Planetary Science Working Group, US India Earth Science Working Group and the Heliophysics Working Group", Bridenstine said.

For the first test mission, slated for 2024, the company wants to dismantle SwissCube, a nanosatellite developed by students from EPFL and other Swiss universities and launched on 23 September 2009.

Commenting on P Chidambaram's statement on Mission Shakti, Reddy said that a mission of this nature can't be kept secret.

"Because satellite is tracked by many stations across the world by manypeople", said Mr Reddy.

When asked about the need for a space command and serial production of the A-Sat, he said, "It is for the government to take a decision". About 2,000 components were sourced from 50 private industries. "As we explained, in 2014 the discussions on this started and in 2016, a presentation was given to the highest office".
