May warns MPs of long delay to Brexit

Brexit: Second referendum, Article 50 delay, amendments and everything else that could happen tonight

If Prime Minister Theresa May presses on with her Brexit deal after lawmakers vote to delay Britain's exit, parliament will have to look at other options, the opposition Labour Party's Brexit spokesman Keir Starmer said on Wednesday. Instead, this is the time for Parliament to declare it wants an extension of Article 50 so that, after two-and-a-half years of vexed negotiations, our political leaders can finally decide on what Brexit means. Their discussions have focused on Attorney General Geoffrey Cox's "clarification" of his legal advice on the backstop.

Even if the deadline is unanimously agreed, the Prime Minister will still need to get a deal through the Houses of Commons, which is now divided on the matter of the Irish back-stop.

Chief Secretary to the Treasury Liz Truss tweeted: "I voted against a delay to Brexit".

On Thursday, lawmakers voted against holding a second referendum on Brexit, and for seeking an extension for the departure.

Former Cabinet minister Esther McVey suggested fellow Brexiteers could back Mrs May's "rubbish" deal next week to make sure the United Kingdom leaves the EU.

Most Conservative MPs voted against delaying Brexit - including seven cabinet members - meaning Mrs.

"The Labour Party leadership are determined to deliver Brexit, which would harm our country".

At least five killed after pedestrian bridge collapse in Mumbai
According to some reports, the bridge collapsed even though it was marked "fit to use" only six months ago after an audit. Tawde meanwhile said an enquiry into the collapse would be conducted by the Railways and the BMC.

Yet even if May brings the DUP and a critical mass of Brexiteers over the line to her side, she also needs the support of significantly more Labour backbenchers too. If her deal falls again, and there is no attempt at a fourth vote, there might be a longer extension, possibly until at least December 2020, which is when the planned transition period, had a withdrawal been agreed, was planned to end.

Next week, the EU's leaders will meet at a summit to discuss the extension of Britain's membership after 29 March, as well as the terms and length of the delay.

He told Germany's Funke newspaper "as long as this isn't clear, Brexit can only be delayed for a few weeks, exclusively to avoid a chaotic withdrawal" on March 29.

The calls follow a second heavy defeat for the Withdrawal Agreement which Mrs May negotiated with the European Union, which is deeply unpopular with Brexiteer Tories as well as Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), on which her minority government relies to achieve a parliamentary majority.

A source said: "It truly is the Hotel California Brexit, as No 10 has been making clear to the rebels". If it passes, she'll seek a June 30 deadline. Senior government sources said it was possible that May would refuse to hold a further meaningful vote on her deal should there be no chance of success.

By law, however, the delay can only be authorized by the European Union, with unanimous approval of the leaders of the remaining 27 countries in the bloc.
