All Blacks lead tributes after NZ terror attack

At least 49 people were killed in a terror attack after gunmen opened fire at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand on Friday.

Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison has confirmed that a man from his country is one of the suspects arrested.

Australian police stepped up patrols around mosques in the state of New South Wales after an Australian extremist killed multiple Muslim worshippers at two New Zealand mosques during Friday (March 15) prayers.

Police found two explosive devices attached to the suspects' vehicles, which have since been disarmed.

"It is clear that this can now only be described as a terrorist attack", Ardern said, call this "one of New Zealand's darkest days".

Three people are in custody, one charged with murder, following the mosque shootings that left at least 49 people dead and dozens more injured. "I am calling on the world, in particular the West, to take quick measures", he said.

He said he was in New Zealand temporarily while he "planned and trained" the attack.

"I can confirm that the individual who was taken into custody... is an Australian-born citizen", Morrison said at a press conference, aired at Periscope.

"Many of those affected may be migrants to New Zealand". One man has been charged with murder following the attacks.

Ordinary people expressed their horror online about a widely disseminated video of a man apparently indiscriminately shooting people inside a mosque with an assault rifle.

"Feeling very sick, that person is brainless and a savage", said one Indonesian twitter user who identified himself as Farhan Adhitama. He also claimed to be a 28-year-old white Australian and a racist.

Counter Terrorism Policing UK supported the request from the New Zealand police "not to share the distressing footage" and called for "both the public and media to show restraint".

"I would describe it as an unprecedented act of violence".

Police urge all mosques across New Zealand to shut their doors and advise people to refrain from visiting them until further notice.

Bangladesh's cricket team - in town for a match - narrowly avoided the attack as they approached the mosque to perform weekly Friday prayers, the team's coach told media.

One person died at the hospital, The New Zealand Herald reported.

In the video that was livestreamed, the killer spends more than two minutes inside the mosque spraying terrified worshippers with gunfire. The deaths occurred at Al Noor mosque and the Linwood Islamic Centre, police said.

"We have mobilised every police resource in the Canterbury region to respond to this and we are also in the process of mobilising every national police resource to keep people safe".

In 2010 and 2011 the city suffered a series of devastating earthquakes, with the most destructive at 6.3 magnitude, which killed almost 200 people and destroyed thousands of buildings.
