Trump wields first presidential veto to nix border emergency rebuff

Trump Again Threatens Europe With Tariffs: Expect Instant Global Recession - Mish Talk

Shortly after President Donald Trump vetoed a Senate bill overruling his national emergency, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced that Congress will vote to override the veto on March 26.

White House spokeswoman Mercedes Schlapp would not say when the veto would happen, but told reporters Friday Trump is "doing what he believes is his constitutional duty, which is to protect the American people".

A Justice Department letter to congressional leaders details the arguments defending the Trump's emergency declaration, arguing that the president was authorized to do so by the National Emergencies Act of 1976. Attorney General William Barr was also at the President's veto event. Angel Moms, mothers of children killed by illegal aliens, were also in attendance.

President Trump signed the first veto of his presidency, rejecting a measure that would reverse the national emergency he declared on the southern border. The House previously passed the resolution last month, 245 (including 13 Republicans) to 182. The emergency declaration came after Trump failed to win an appropriation for a border wall in a continuing resolution to fund the government last fall.

Twelve Republican senators banded together Thursday to deliver the forceful rebuke after expressing concerns that Trump's use of the national emergency declaration as an end-run around Congress violates the separation of powers and sets a bad precedent that a would-be future Democratic president could follow to unilaterally drive their agenda.

Of course, not every Democratic candidate tried to immediately leverage O'Rourke's campaign launch for their own means. Meanwhile, on Comedy Central, Trevor Noah also likened Trump's movements to a musical performance.

Trump expressed pride in the Republicans who did not vote to support the resolution and said later that he had sympathy for those who defied him, adding they did what they had to do. It still faces several legal challenges in federal court.

Trump made the construction of a wall along the nearly 2,000-mile-long US-Mexico border a cornerstone of his 2016 presidential campaign, saying Mexico would pay for it.

In challenging Trump on Thursday, only one Republican who is up for re-election next year - Susan Collins of ME - voted for the disapproval resolution.

The large numbers have put a strain on immigration enforcement, although critics say a wall would do little to discourage the crossings since many of those apprehended at the border turn themselves in voluntarily. "Think of that", he said.

The wall was a signature campaign issue for Trump, but he was never able to deliver on his promise to make Mexico pay for it, and the issue languished during his first two years in office.
