Senate Demands Trump End US Support for War in Yemen

The Latest: Senate votes to end US support of Yemen war

In a major step toward ending US complicity in the world's worst humanitarian crisis, the Senate on Wednesday passed a War Powers resolution to cut off American military support for the Saudi-led coalition's assault on Yemen.

The 54-to-46 vote marks the second time in recent months that the Senate has rejected the United States' continued participation in Saudi Arabia's bombing campaign against Yemen's Houthi rebels, waged in the name of holding back Iran's expansion in the region.

The Yemen War Powers resolution also serves as a vehicle to pressure Trump to condemn the Saudi government over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, which U.S. intelligence agencies have pinned on Saudi prince Mohammed bin Salman. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Sen.

However, if the resolution is passed fully, it will become a historic move as it will be the first measure by the US Congress to invoke the 1973 War Powers Resolution to directly put limit on the President's use of military powers.

The measure seeks to end any US military involvement in the conflict in Yemen, including providing targeting support for Saudi air strikes, without authorization from Congress. "Lastly and not leastly important, the United States Congress is going to reassert its constitutional responsibility over issues of war that has been abdicated to presidents - Democrats and Republicans - for too many years". The Democratic Senators were joined by six Republican Senators.

The Senate resolution, an unprecedented attempt to curtail presidential powers, sought to end the U.S. military involvement in the conflict within 30 days.

Republican Senator Mike Lee concurred, saying Saudi Arabia "is not an ally that deserves our support or our military intervention".

Al-Iryani, the information minister, warned that any USA pullout from its support for the coalition in Yemen's war would only serve Iran.

The resolution is a reminder that Congress has the legal ability to compel the removal of USA military forces, absent a formal declaration of war.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of CT hailed the outcome. "This resolution sends a awful message of USA division and lack of resolve, and sets a bad precedent for using the War Powers Resolution to express political disagreements with a president".

The Senate has blamed Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for ordering the death of the U.S. resident, and are unhappy with Mr Trump's response to the issue.

The war in Yemen is the world's worst humanitarian crisis, with an estimated 14 million people at risk of starvation. But due to procedural matters, the House must now vote again on either the Senate version that passed this week, or a reconciled version of the House and Senate bills.
