'Baby of British Daesh bride dies in Syria'

Shamima Begum interviewed by Sky News

"It is against global law to make someone stateless, and now an innocent child has died as a result of a British woman being stripped of her citizenship", she tweeted.

On Friday, it was confirmed the weeks-old boy died in a camp in northern Syria, with reports suggesting he had suffered from breathing difficulties.

However, Javid had previously said that bringing the baby home from the war zone would be "incredibly hard".

"My number one job is to do whatever I can to keep this country safe", Mr Javid had said last month when announcing the revocation of her British citizenship.

Ms Begum recently resurfaced in a refugee camp, and gave birth last month.

As the Begum family lawyer emphasised the reports were unconfirmed, others said people in the camp had reported that the baby was still alive.

The SDF - a US-backed, anti-IS rebel group that controls the camp where Ms Begum is living - confirmed the death on Friday.

But following her third child's birth last month, British officials stripped the 19-year-old of her citizenship as it is permitted to do in cases where it is "conducive to the public good". However, this looks unlikely as the Netherlands authorities have said that they will not assist their own nationals returning from fighting in Syria, so are unlikely to help a foreign national.

Kirsty McNeill, a director at Save the Children UK, said it is possible the baby's death could have been avoided.

The Red Crescent in Syria may also have been able to assist the British government in repatriating Jarrah to Britain.

Shamima was 15 when she and two other schoolgirls fled the United Kingdom to join IS in February 2015. "This is a reminder of why it is so, so unsafe for anyone to be in this war zone".

Speaking to Matt Frei, the former Met chief superintendent Dal Babu said that Shamima Begum's child was "innocent" amid a row over whether the Isis bride should be allowed to return to the UK. Advocates for Begum say it is unjust to rescind her citizenship rather than bring her home and let her face trial.

He added: "Many of us feared this tragic outcome when the Home Secretary washed his hands of Britain's responsibility for a British citizen and a British baby".

Begum's family said the boy appeared to be in good health when he was born on February 17. "That's why I really want to get back to Britain, because I know it will be taken care of, like, health-wise, at least".

Begum told the Times newspaper in February that she didn't regret joining so-called Islamic State but had admitted it was corrupt and oppressive.

Earlier this week, Mr Akunjee tweeted a screenshot of the reply that they had received from the Home Office.

Two senior members of the government said on Saturday that the death was a tragedy but that the home secretary took the decision on grounds of national security.
