Javid says police resources ‘very important’ as May faces knife crime backlash

Middle class drug users blamed for violent deaths and stabbings

Sajid Javid acknowledged today that police resources are important in tackling knife violence, as Theresa May faced a mounting backlash for denying a link between officer numbers and bloodshed on Britain's streets. If one young person gets stabbed, similar youngsters locally are more likely to carry a knife for their own protection - and so the infection spreads.

May introduced reforms when she was interior minister to use the powers in a more targeted way following accusations that black and ethnic minority individuals were being disproportionately affected.

Theresa May provoked fury on Monday when she said there "was no direct correlation between certain crimes and police numbers".

"That's why the government will be launching a consultation on treating this as a public health issue".

Two-thirds of police forces in England and Wales recently responded to a Freedom of Information request from Channel 4's Dispatches which showed that, in those force areas, the number of teenagers recorded as having killed with a knife had risen from 26 in 2016 to 46 previous year.

"We think it needs to be treated as if it was an emergency", she said.

"If there are sufficient police numbers, can the prime minister please explain why yesterday the defence secretary was offering to send in the military to assist?"

A man has been arrested in Leicester in connection with the murder of teenager Jodie Chesney who was stabbed to death in east London, the Metropolitan Police said.

The United States and the DPRK have said they intend to continue talks, but have not said when a next round might take place. Michael Cohen testifies before the House Oversight Committee on Capitol Hill, February 27, 2019.

When asked for his view on the matter, Mr Javid said it was important to "always make sure the police have the resources they need", adding: "We have to listen to them when they talk about resources".

In the wake of Jodie's death, her family have backed calls for tougher sentences on knife crime.

The home secretary said he wanted a "legal duty" on government departments to help prevent serious violence.

Mr Allen said: "We see too many weak gateways or disclaimers, from online retailers specifically, where the customer self-declares they are 18 without having to submit any proof - this is a wholly inadequate solution and provides an easy route for children to obtain knives against very limited checks".

Mrs May confirmed she will hold a summit in Downing Street bringing together police forces and other agencies to confront the growing crisis. We will only defeat the scourge of violence if we understand and address its complex root causes.

But the rise in violent crime is more than a question of police funding and overall numbers.

Meanwhile, across the country, there has been a 12 per cent increase in police recorded offences involving a knife over the past year, to 39,332.

In a video posted on Tuesday, he said young people "shouldn't pay the price for austerity with their lives".
