Huawei unveils 5G foldable smartphone to challenge Samsung Galaxy Fold

Huawei’s Price Blows On Samsung’s Folding Phone Is a Market Re-shaper

What do you think about OPPO's prototype and foldable phones in general?

The Chinese firm's Mate X, launched during the ongoing Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain, is fitted with an 8-inch external screen that wraps around the smartphone body when folded outward.

Phone manufacturers have been gearing up for the 5G era, and Huawei is among them.

Compared with Samsung's take, the Mate X sports larger OLED screens across the board, and rather than folding inward, it folds outward.

Open and close. Open and close. When folded, It becomes a dual display phone - one side is a 6.6-inch (2480 x 1148) 19.5:9 display while the other is a 6.38-inch (2480 x 892) 25:9 display. And the exterior 4.6-inch display looks kind of ridiculous from the outside, with its obscenely large bezels and downsized UI elements to fit everything in that tiny space. The secondary screen is also the screen to use if you want to take a selfie.

However, that 8-inch screen also has its own small issue, because with an aspect ratio of 8:7.1 when fully expanded, the Mate X's screen is almost square, which means you're going to get some pretty severe letterboxing when watching videos. Hopefully, Huawei can iron that out before the phone/tablet goes on sale to the public later in the year.

Check out that "falcon hinge" design. To purchase the Mate X unlocked with no warranty as you can do with other Huawei products on Amazon is not really a good idea at this high price. Just to be clear, this means that microSD card isn't compatible with the device. It has a thickness of 5.4 mm in the unfolded state which is thinner than the Apple iPad Pro 2018.

Asia report: Most markets higher, Aussie coal miners suffer
CENTRAL Queensland coal is at the heart of high-level global talks between Australia and China. Shipments were now taking more than 40 days to clear customs instead of around 20 previously.

Also, 5G is at "the centre of the economic and political war between the United States and China" because it will be the backbone of a fully connected world, he added.

Huawei said its 5G-capable Mate X will start at €2,299. As usual, this is backed by a 55W Huawei SuperCharge-powered charger that can provide up to 85 percent juice in just 30 minutes. If they arent dummies, we are looking at a main camera, accompanied by a depth sensor.

The value tag for Huawei's foldable 5G-enabled phone, the Mate X, is downright astronomical.

We were lucky enough to get a small demonstration of the Mate X and were impressed with what we saw.

The decision to show media the device in this controlled fashion has us believe that, again like Samsung, Huawei has made a technological marvel but is cautious about the software bugs. However, as great as the screens are, it still faces the same challenges all foldable phones need to overcome.

The battery comes in at 4380mAh - one of the largest available in a smartphone. At €2,299 (about £2000 and $2600, then), it's even more expensive than the $1980 Samsung Galaxy Fold.

So far all foldable phone implementations have looked clunky or at best alpha-stage.
