Fire at budget hotel in Delhi kills 17

Delhi fire: Karol Bagh's Hotel Arpit Palace in India goes up in flames | Daily Star

17 people have died which includes a woman and a child.

The death toll later rose to 17, including a mother and child who tried to escape the flames by jumping from an upstairs window. According to the eyewitnesses, many people are still feared trapped inside the hotel.

Guests at the hotel, popular with budget and business travellers, were unable to use corridors to escape because of wooden panelling, according to a fire officer.

Dozens were also severely injured in the fire and have been rushed to nearby hospitals. Most people jumped out of the upper floors of the hotel to save their lives.

At least 35 people were injured in the blaze, said Madhur Verma, deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi), adding that one person was still missing. The first tender that reached the spot did not have adequate water. A license is issued only after inspection.

Delhi minister Satyendra Jain said the district magistrate has ordered an inquiry into the fire incident.

Ariana Grande Clarifies Tweets About Cardi B's 'Best Rap Album' Win
Many fans took this to be about Cardi B personally, and you'd be forgiven for thinking so, too - but that's not the case. She went onto thank daughter Kulture and touched on her fears surrounding giving birth shortly after dropping the album.

In recent months, officials have shut down a number of shops and restaurants in some of Delhi's most exclusive neighbourhoods for not following fire safety measures. At least 35 rooms were booked by members of one family, who were in the city for a special function.

A call about the fire was received at 4.35am and 24 fire tenders were rushed to the spot, a senior officer from the Delhi Fire Service said.

He, however, forgot that Fire Department comes under Delhi government.

Unconfirmed reports say the death toll is likely to rise as numerous injured jumped from the burning building to the ground.

Accidental fires are common across India because of poor safety standards and lax enforcement of regulations.

Activists say builders and landlords often amend building plans to add space and ignore safety norms to save costs.
