Woody Allen Sues Amazon for almost $70 Million

Woody Allen sues Amazon for $68MILLION after it pulled the plug on his film

Filmmaker Woody Allen is suing Amazon Studios, saying he deserves at least $US68 million ($95.8 million) in damages for its refusal to distribute his movie A Rainy Day in NY.

The continuing controversy over Allen's past apparently convinced Amazon to scrap the release of A Rainy Day in NY in any form, prompting Allen's breach of contract lawsuit, which was filed in a NY federal court.

In the lawsuit, Allen's team argues that the allegations were well known when Amazon entered into an agreement with the director and don't give Amazon a basis for terminating the contract.

"There simply was no legitimate ground for Amazon to renege on its promises", the lawsuit says. Allen has been dogged by such claims for more than 20 years stemming from an accusation that he molested his and Mia Farrow's adopted daughter Dylan.

Amazon did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Two years later, Allen's son Ronan Farrow contributed a column to The Hollywood Reporter in which he said he believed his sister's claims. Allen has consistently denied the allegations.

Maroon 5 to incorporate SpongeBob's 'Sweet Victory' in Super Bowl halftime show
He told " Entertainment Tonight " that " no one thought about " doing the halftime show performance more than he did. While there were many that enjoyed the halftime show , there were a lot of people who were not fans of it.

He claims his representatives met with Amazon executives in December 2017 to "discuss the negative publicity and reputational harm Amazon Studios had received because of allegations made against" former president Roy Price, who was accused of sexually harassing a coworker.

He is seeking that $9 million along with minimum guarantees owed him for other films, totaling "in excess of $68,000,000", according to a complaint filed Thursday in federal court in NY and obtained by AFP.

But Amazon refused to distribute the first of Allen's films, "A Rainy Day in NY", the lawsuit alleges.

According to the complaint, Allen finished a film called "A Rainy Day in New York" that Amazon never released, breaching its contract. The following month, Amazon's general counsel, Ajay Patel, suggested pushing back the release of "A Rainy Day in New York" until 2019, and Allen agreed, according to the suit.

In January 2018, Chalamet revealed he donated his entire salary from the film to charities Time's Up, The LGBT Center in NY, and RAINN as he didn't "want to profit from [his] work". As a result of the renewed scrutiny on the director, the first film in the partnership, Wonder Wheel, had trouble finding willing distributors, and eventually flopped when it finally did see release.
