NBA To Investigate Ex-Warrior McCaw’s Short Cleveland Tenure

The Warriors Reportedly Requested The NBA Investigate The Cavs Signing And Releasing Patrick McCaw

The NBA is looking into the circumstances surrounding Patrick McCaw's short stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to multiple reports.

So, McCaw made a decision to wait things out and played a little hardball with the Golden State Warriors.

The Warriors, who weren't interested in McCaw and allowed him to stretch his free agency into the start of the season, now want the league to look into Cleveland's actions.

McCaw spent his first two seasons with the Warriors, but held out after their most recent championship run. The Cavs signed McCaw on December 30 and then waived him almost a week later, on January 7. No one is sure exactly why the Cavaliers did this, but there are a few possibilities.

NBA To Formally Review Cavaliers' Signing Of Patrick McCaw

Channing Frye #9 hi-fives Patrick McCaw #3 of the Cleveland Cavaliers during the game against the Utah Jazz on January 4, 2019 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. The Warriors chose not to match, and McCaw was finally freed from his RFA purgatory.

The Warriors declined to match McCaw's offer sheet almost seven months after rejecting their $1.7 million qualifying offer and two-year, $5.2 million deal, which included a non-guaranteed deal his second year.

However, in general, it's unlikely that the league will be too thrilled with the Cavaliers signing McCaw to what was essentially a sham contract. McCaw cleared waivers and is now an unrestricted free agent.

In any case, it will be interesting to see what the National Basketball Association decides and if the McCaw saga affects restricted free agency moving forward.
