President Trump says he’s cutting off FEMA funding to California over fires

President Donald Trump

President Donald Trump on January 9, 2019 said he is cutting emergency federal aid sent to help California after devastating wildfires unless the Democratic-led state gets its 'act together'.

In a tweet, President Trump called the situation in California "disgraceful", saying that lives and money could have been saved if the state utilized proper forest management. I have ordered FEMA to send no more money.

November's fire in the northern California town of Paradise was the deadliest USA wildfire in a century, killing at least 85 people and destroying almost 14,000 homes.

On Nov. 10, 2018, just days before he toured areas of California damaged by fires, Trump blamed the state's "poor" forest management for the devastation.

It's unclear from the tweet if Trump had already cut off funds or was only threatening to do so.

FEMA could not immediately comment because of the government shutdown.

Trump has repeatedly blamed California officials for failing to manage the state's forests, but numerous areas affected by fire are not forests at all.

The House Republican minority leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy also is from California.

However, Fugate said that federal law gives Trump the authority to determine whether to issue disaster declarations for future wildfires.

However, Newsom has been harshly critical of Mr. Trump since taking office this week.

Daryl Osby, the Los Angeles County Fire Chief, said in November: "We're in extreme climate change now".

Governor Gavin Newsom proposed US$305 million to remove thousands of acres of forests and brush, expand emergency crews and modernise California's 911 systems.

The natural disaster was the deadliest, most destructive wildfire in California history, leaving an overall damage cost of $23 billion, according to German insurance company Munich Re.

In a tweet, Harris noted that Californians endured the deadliest wildfire in the state's history a year ago.

Much of California's forests is federally managed or privately owned, putting them outside the state's authority to manage. However, this is not the first time he's threatened to pull funding from California over the fires, during one of the deadliest seasons on record. The House, newly under Democrats' control, is planning to vote on a package as soon as next week.
