Attorney general nominee says he won't fire special counsel: Graham

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is expected to leave his position soon after William Barr is confirmed as attorney general

The ongoing management of the special counsel's office, however, has remained with the man who commissioned it: Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the Justice Department has said. Barr was spending most of Wednesday on Capitol Hill, meeting senators on the committee before his confirmation hearing next week.

If confirmed, Barr would then oversee the special counsel's Russian Federation investigation.

The newspaper also reported that he suggested secretly recording Mr Trump to expose White House turmoil and dysfunction. "Whether it's Bob Mueller or Rod Rosenstein or Matt Whitaker or Bill Barr, that investigation's going to be handled appropriately by the Department of Justice".

On Wednesday, when asked by ABC News Chief Justice Correspondent Pierre Thomas to assess Rosenstein's performance at the Justice Department, Barr replied: "Excellent".

The revelation, which was also confirmed by CNN, comes after weeks of speculation over whether the deputy attorney general would resign from his role within the Justice Department after the termination of former Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

"Barr must commit to supporting special counsel Mueller's investigation and allowing him to follow the facts", said Sen.

Last year, the White House expressed alarm over the warrant to spy on Page, saying it "raises serious concerns about the integrity of decisions made at the highest levels of the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to use the government's most intrusive surveillance tools against American citizens".

The source said Rosenstein is not being forced out, and he has conveyed his thinking to the White House.

In May 2017, shortly after the president dumped Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey, Rosenstein appointed Mueller to take over the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe of Russia's meddling in the 2016 election and possible ties between Russians and Trump associates. "My guess is that he is making room for the new attorney general to build a team that he wants around him", Sanders said. Russian Federation has also denied any election interference.

Barr asserted that the president had been acting within his executive branch of authority when he made the request and said Mueller "should not be permitted to demand that the president submit to interrogation about alleged obstruction". The appointment followed the recusal of Sessions because of his work on the Trump campaign and Trump's firing of former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

Sen. Graham, the incoming chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said that Barr would interfere with Mueller's investigation.

It is not clear who Trump will nominate to fill Rosenstein's position.
