Romney says Trump presidency causing global dismay

How the Trump presidency made me a better American

During the 2016 Republican primaries, Romney advised his fellow party members against nominating Donald Trump.

Mitt Romney, the former Republican presidential candidate and incoming USA senator, has sharply criticised Donald Trump both personally and professionally, accusing him of deserting the nation's allies and lacking the character to lead a "divided" nation.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment, but Trump fired back in a tweet on Wednesday taking aim at Romney's failed 2012 White House bid. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), Trump told Romney to stop attacking him and "be helpful" to his presidency.

He wrote that with such a "divided, resentful and angry" nation, Trump has seemingly lacked the leadership needed to resolve it.

On CNN, Romney said her choice of words was 'probably more civil than it might have been across the Thanksgiving dinner table'.

It is not that all of the president's policies have been misguided.

Mr Romney was a critic of Mr Trump during his election campaign in 2016, calling him "very, very not smart" and accusing him of "lacking the temperament to be president".

The 2012 nominee said a uniting president is more needed than ever, and suggested that Trump falls short.

He also said the compromise should include changes in federal law to discourage people from trying to enter the US illegally. The new year will start like how 2018 ended: the federal government will be under a partial shutdown with no end in sight.

Romney later told CNN that there "are places where we agree on a whole series of policy fronts, but there are places that I think the president can, if you will, elevate his game and do a better job to help bring us together as a nation".

Romney is quick to point out that he supported Trump making the rich richer through tax cuts and he loves the dismantling of regulations at the expense of consumers and the environment.

"The appointment of senior persons of lesser experience, the abandonment of allies who fight beside us, and the president's thoughtless claim that America has always been a "sucker" in world affairs all defined his presidency down", he wrote.

Even Romney's niece, Ronna Romney McDaniel, defended the president, who infamously asked her to stop publicly using her last name when she became Republican chairwoman in 2017 because of Trump's feud with Romney. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., noted that nearly half the Senate Republicans are up for re-election in 2020 and some may feel the need to push back against Trump.

But the former MA governor who fell short as the Republican presidential nominee in 2012 insisted he won't make another run at the White House himself.

He added that Romney is "petrified" that under Trump, the USA could end a war.

Romney criticized Trump in a Washington Post op-ed for failing to "seize the mantle" of the presidency by leading with dignity to inspire the world, criticizing his bad approval numbers around the globe.

On social media some praised Mr Romney, others said he should have gone further.
