Huawei CFO freed on bail ahead of extradition

Jane Wolsak/CP Meng Wanzhou speaks to her lawyer David Martin during a bail hearing at B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver, on December 10, 2018.

Meng, the daughter of Huawei's founder, was arrested as part of a USA investigation on December 1 as she was transferring flights in Vancouver.

Trump said during an interview with Reuters that his administration could weigh in on the case against Huawei's Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou, who was arrested in Canada recently for allegedly violating sanctions against Iran. The case against Meng stems from a 2013 Reuters report about Huawei's close ties to Hong Kong-based Skycom Tech Co Ltd, which attempted to sell U.S. equipment to Iran despite United States and European Union bans.

Vice Premier Liu He talked by phone with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer talked by phone about "the promotion of the next economic and trade consultations", said a two-sentence Commerce Ministry statement.

Meng Wanzhou was recently detained while changing flights in Vancouver. Some organizations have even threatened to punish staff members caught with Apple devices, according to CNN.

The U.S. State Department was considering issuing a travel warning for its citizens, two sources said on Tuesday.

Confirmation of the detention came soon after the executive, Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, returned to a packed Vancouver courtroom for a bail hearing in a case that has angered Beijing.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale confirmed Kovrig's detention. Five friends pledged equity in their homes and other money as a guarantee she will not flee. On TV and social media, commentators likened her arrest to the detention in China of a Mark Zuckerberg sibling or a cousin of Steve Jobs.

Rob Malley, president of the Brussels-based group, said he thinks Kovrig was in Beijing on personal matters at the time of his arrest and was definitely not there for any illegal objective or for any reason that would undermine Chinese national security.

"My father founded Huawei and I would never do anything that would cause the company reputational damage", she said.

A Canadian judge on Tuesday granted bail to Meng Wanzhou, the Chinese telecom executive facing possible extradition to the US after she was detained in Vancouver earlier this month.

"We are looking forward to moving forward to China", she said after the B.C. delegation's stops in South Korea and Japan.

Meng, 46, is requesting bail on grounds that she is in poor health and has close ties to Vancouver. "As you probably know, China is our second largest market after the United States".

"We urge China to end all forms of arbitrary detentions and to respect the protections and freedom of all individuals under China's worldwide human rights and consular commitments", deputy State Department spokesman Robert Palladino told reporters". It also said Meng and Huawei misled banks about the company's business dealings in Iran.

"We have every confidence that the Canadian and USA legal systems will reach the right conclusion", a spokesperson told the Global Times. -China tensions in trade negotiations that both sides have agreed must be concluded by March 1. If extradited to the United States, Meng would face charges of conspiracy to defraud multiple financial institutions, the court heard.

Huawei is the biggest global supplier of network gear for phone and internet companies and has been the target of deepening US security concerns over its ties to the Chinese government.

"We will continue to follow the bail hearing tomorrow".
