O2 services slowly being restored after UK-wide outage

O2 network down across Kent leaving thousands without data

Ericsson said the problem stemmed from an expired certificate in "two specific software versions of the SGSN-MME" - which has now been "decommissioned" by the company.

Some users also suggested that SMS messaging might not be working, too, leaving them unable to send texts.

O2 has said a "full service" will be restored by Friday morning following a data outage, which affected millions of users.

"We're aware that our customers are unable to use data this morning", O2 has said in a statement.

The company suffered an outage on their data and it was basically down all day yesterday with millions of customers affected by the outage. Our technical teams will continue to monitor service performance closely over the next few days to ensure we remain stable. Ericsson confirmed that an "expired certificate" in the software caused the outage impacting services in the United Kingdom and Japan.

An O2 spokesperson said: "We're very sorry about Thursday's data issue". The company also apologized for the inconvenience.

The worldwide outage, which also affected Tesco Mobile and Giffgaff, Lycamobile, Sky, and London bus timetables, was caused by a "software issue" with one of their 3rd party suppliers.

O2 said it would share further updates as soon as they were available. Thousands of Uber drivers said they were missing out on trips due to the O2 network outage.

O2 has said that services are slowly being restored to customers tonight.

The shutdown was triggered because of the industry standard practices which require mobile network equipment to turn off when certificates expire to prevent security breaches after bad actors would add malicious devices into a carrier's network.

The O2 Twitter account has been busy responding to customer's enquiries asking when the network will be back.

Angry customers have since slammed the network, calling it an "embarrassing and insulting gesture" with some saying the credit should be donated to charity instead. Other telcos have experienced outages in the last couple of months, EE and Vodafone certainly did in October, though it wasn't as widely reported or condemned on social media.
