New satellite images reveal North Korea is expanding key missile base

"Any denuclearization agreement would require North Korea to allow worldwide inspectors to determine that these units are no longer armed with nuclear weapons", they said.

One such facility is the missile base near Yeongjeo-dong, a site that has long concerned United States and South Korean officials and the subject of the analysis of the new images released Wednesday.

There was no immediate reaction from the Trump administration Thursday to the reports that raised concern in national security circles about the pace of denuclearization talks between Washington and Pyongyang.

They confirm what has become increasingly obvious in the past few months - that Mr Trump's summit with Mr Kim last June has done little to stop the North from consolidating its long-range nuclear capability.

Some analysts say the activity is geared toward the continual development of nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missiles that could reach the USA mainland.

"Construction on the previously unidentified site has continued even after the Singapore Summit" between Kim and President Donald Trump in June, Jeffrey Lewis of the Middlebury Institute, one of the analysts that identified the site, told CNN.

Since the Singapore meeting, talks between North Korea and the United States have stalled over how to eradicate the North's nuclear weapons program.

"North Korea appears to have begun to expand the base significantly, starting with the construction of a new headquarters area in 2014", the report stated. North Korea is now seeking security guarantees from the USA and relief from the worldwide sanctions.

Hwang Pyong So, one of Kim Jong Un's top aides, was not present at the funeral, but a South Korean government official who spoke to South Korean paper Segye Ilbo said his absence does not hold "major significance".

U.S. officials insist on the complete, verified and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean peninsula before tough sanctions are lifted.

Satellite images have picked up activity at a North Korean missile base. "These shelters are similar to the ones seen at the older portion of the Yeongjeo-dong base".
