Trudeau says he had advance notice of Huawei executive's arrest

Trouble

The chances of trade peace between the U.S. and China took a blow Thursday as it emerged Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou had been held in Canada and faces extradition to the United States over alleged Iran sanctions breaches by the firm. He declined to give further details, given that Meng faces a bail hearing on Friday.

The Chinese government said Meng had broken no USA or Canadian laws and demanded Canada "immediately correct the mistake" and release her.

"Americans are grateful that our Canadian partners have arrested the Chief Financial Officer of a giant Chinese telecom company for breaking USA sanctions against Iran", he said.

Huawei, which overtook Apple as the world's number two smartphone maker this year, said it was unaware of any wrongdoing by Meng and was provided "very little information" about the charges. "The company believes the Canadian and U.S. legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion", Huawei said.

Beijing has asked Washington and Ottawa to "immediately release the detained person" and explain the reason for her arrest, said a foreign ministry spokesman, Geng Shuang.

The U.S. Justice Department could not immediately be reached for comment. The U.S. has been looking into Huawei's alleged shipping of products to Iran since 2016, as these actions violate the country's export and sanctions laws.

Huawei has said it complies with all applicable export control and sanctions laws and United States and other regulations.

As well as the CFO, she is deputy chairwoman of Huawei and a daughter of the company's founder.

Eurasia Group's Paul Triolo said: "The arrest of the senior Huawei officials suggests that the gloves are now fully off in this arena".

"We will continue to discuss issues across a range of fora created to do just that", said the official, who requested anonymity given the sensitivity of the situation.

Reacting to the arrest, US Senator Ben Sasse told Associated Press that China was aggressively engaged in undermining US national security interests, often "using private sector entities".

ANALYST'S TAKE: "We are closely watching the developments in Asia after reports that Canada has arrested the Huawei CFO facing USA extradition for allegedly violating Iran sanctions".

Meanwhile, the substantially more independent South China Morning Post reported today that Meng and her father recently told Huawei employees that strict compliance with regulations was sometimes not financially feasible and could be avoided.

Meng Wanzhou was detained at Vancouver airport on Saturday on an extradition request from the US.

"So not respecting this particular arrest, but Huawei is one company we've been concerned about", he added.

Both Huawei and ZTE Corp. have faced trouble with the US and other governments over dealings with Iran and fears the Chinese companies' equipment might be used for spying.

The arrest coincided with a highly anticipated meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump in Buenos Aires that resulted in a 90-day trade war truce to allow for further talks to address Washington's concerns. The U.S. has also banned all governmental agencies from buying or using Huawei phones or equipment.

The founder Ren was a People's Liberation Army soldier before starting the company and opponents say it retains links with China's security services.

Her detention was made at the request of USA authorities.

Meng's arrest and detention have only amplified the already-tense state of U.S. One of those people is Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE), who said the U.S. "can't sit on the sidelines" while China undermines national security with its actions.

Meng, who was collared by Canadian authorities at Vancouver airport, is now facing extradition to the United States, where she will, it is believed, face allegations she broke sanctions on selling equipment to Iran.
