Rising CO2 emissions a 'big worry', says leading scientist

The research, carried out by the Global Carbon Project (GCP), says that this year's "strong" rise in CO2 levels is projected to be 2.7% as compared to 2017's 1.6%. The report calls on countries to consider health in analyzing the cost-effectiveness of climate change mitigation.

In the list of 43, Turkey reported the highest increase in its total emission both in percentage (135%) and absolute (285 million tonnes of CO2) terms from 1990 to 2016.

"If you don't think you need to take action for the sake of climate change, make sure when you think about the planet you incorporate a couple of lungs, a brain and a heart".

India's carbon emissions are projected to rise as much as 6.3% in 2018, according to researchers at the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom and the Global Carbon Project, an organisation that quantifies carbon emissions worldwide. Emissions from the USA, the second-biggest emitter, were likely to reach 5.4 billion tonnes, a rise of 2.5 per cent from previous year.

The trend indicates that if they fail to cut their emissions more drastically by 2020, the burden of mitigation will fall on developing countries, including India, post-2020 despite their much lower per capita emission as compared to the USA and 28 European Union (EU) nations.

"A robust global economy, insufficient emission reductions in developed countries, and a need for increased energy use in developing countries where per capita emissions remain far below those of wealthier nations will continue to put upward pressure on Carbon dioxide emissions". The US accounts for 15% and its emissions are estimated to rise 2.5% this year "after several years in decline".

Kid Rock slams Joy Behar in Fox interview
WSMV reported that the replacement comes after Rock made derogatory comments about Joy Behar on an episode of Fox & Friends. That honor now goes to James Shaw Jr., local hero of the Antioch Waffle House shooting.

This year's growth in emissions has been attributed to the strong economic growth. There was a decrease from the European Union, but only by 0.7 percent.

The report says if we meet the commitments of the 2015 Paris climate agreement then it can save millions of lives as well as hundreds of billions of dollars till the middle of the century.

The day after Thanksgiving, the Trump administration released a almost 1,700-page report cowritten by hundreds of scientists finding that climate change is already causing increasing damage to the United States.

Compiled by Imperial College London, the rankings assess 25 countries' performance on curbing fossil fuel use, deploying clean power capacity, electric vehicle uptake, carbon storage capacity, and energy efficiency. At the same time, the price of electricity from renewable sources has plummeted.

Alyssa Gilbert, director of policy and translation at Imperial's Grantham Institute, said the research provided a "useful barometer" of the progress made by countries as negotiations get underway at COP24. But probably not, she added.

The news global greenhouse gas emissions are rising had been widely expected, but it should still send shockwaves around the UN Summit.
