Massive outage at O2 affects 32m customers

O2 blames global network outage on third-party software glitch

Customers with the mobile phone company O2 have been left without service today after the network went down.

Thousands of mobile phone users across Kent have lost their data service this morning.

Mark Evans, the CEO of Telefonica (O2) said: "I want to let our customers know how sorry I am for the impact our network data issue has had on them, and reassure them that our teams, together with Ericsson, are doing everything we can".

A statement on their website said engineers are investigating issues related to data problems.

Companies that share O2's network - such as GiffGaff, Sky Mobile and Tesco Mobile - are also being hit by the problems. "We are really sorry and working as hard and as fast as we can to fix this". "We are working closely with the remaining customers that are still experiencing issues".

Senate defies Trump, showing anger with Saudis for Khashoggi
The procedural vote received more Republican support than had been expected after the resolution, sponsored by Republican Sen. Last time Congress took that bill was in March and it fell short by six votes then.

The company has 25 million customers across the United Kingdom.

The outage also has serious implications for places that rely upon the O2 network for real-time informational services, as reported by the Independent.

"An initial root cause analysis indicates that the main issue was an expired certificate in the software versions installed with these customers", it said. The difficulties were first reported at about 05:30 this morning.

O2 says that voice services should not be affected by the outage. According to two people directly involved, an issue relating to software in the systems provided by Ericsson has been identified. Our technical teams are investigating.

At 1:39 pm on Thursday, December 6, 2018, the SoftBank Network Center detected software's malfunction in all of the packet switching machines manufactured by Ericsson, which are installed at the Tokyo Center and the Osaka Center, covering mobile customers nationwide.
