Facebook Struck Deals Over Data and Burnt Rivals, Say Lawmakers

Silhouettes of mobile users are seen next to a screen projection of the Facebook logo

Collins also alleged that Facebook took aggressive positions against competitor apps by denying them access to any user data.

Facebook gave some companies, including Netflix and Airbnb, preferential access to user data in 2015 as it limited services for most others, according to company emails and presentations released by a British politician.

Collins notes that a recurring theme in the 250-page cache of documents is that Facebook pushed the "idea of linking access to friends data to the financial value of the developers' relationship with Facebook".

-Mark Zuckerberg wanted "full reciprocity" between Facebook and app developers i.e. you share all your data on users with us, and we'll share all of ours with you.

"We've prepared reactive PR", Osofsky wrote, to which Zuckerberg replied, "Yup, go for it". "Based on their initial testing, it seems that this would allow us to upgrade users without subjecting them to an Android permissions dialogue at all", Yul Kwon, a Facebook developer, wrote.

Facebook had objected to their release. "It is not clear that there was any user consent for this, nor how Facebook decided which companies should be whitelisted or not", the summary states.

The parliament's Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee received the documents from app developer Six4Three, which had acquired the files dating from 2013-2015, as part of a USA lawsuit against the social media giant. He'd obtained the documents after compelling the founder of US software company Six4Three to hand them over during a business trip to London.

UN Security Council to meet on Iran missile test
The Iranian regime has just test-fired a medium range ballistic missile that is capable of carrying multiple warheads. "No UN Security Council resolution has banned Iran's missile program or missile tests", the Iranian ministry added.

"We stand by the platform changes we made in 2015 to stop a person from sharing their friends' data with developers", the company said in a statement.

"Like any business, we had many internal conversations about the various ways we could build a sustainable business model for our platform", Facebook said.

Zuckerberg in 2012 underestimated how much giving developers access to data could be a risk. With regards to Onavo, Facebook argues "we've always been clear when people download Onavo about the information that is collected and how it is used, including by Facebook". "We've never sold anyone's data".

This includes that Facebook tried to hide from Android phone users that it was collecting data about their calls and texts in case it turned into a PR problem.

The documents had been sealed by a California court.

Facebook wants the laptop to be evaluated to determine what happened in the United Kingdom, to what extent the court order was breached, and how much of its confidential information has been divulged to the committee.
