UN Security Council to meet on Iran missile test

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned of regional escalation after Iran conducted a missile test

"No UN Security Council resolution has banned Iran's missile program or missile tests", the Iranian ministry added.

Pompeo said the United States was pushing the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to reduce funding to countries such as China, saying they already had access to financial markets to raise capital.

This test violates UN Security Council resolution 2231 that bans Iran from undertaking "any activity related to ballistic missiles created to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology..." The missile has a range that allows it to strike parts of Europe and anywhere in the Middle East.

The Iranian regime has just test-fired a medium range ballistic missile that is capable of carrying multiple warheads.

In May, U.S. President Donald Trump pulled Washington out of the nuclear deal approved before he took office, and reimposed sanctions on Tehran.

Washington's Iran special envoy Brian Hook insisted on Monday that despite Iran's assertions to the contrary, Iranian missile tests were not defensive in nature.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speaks during an event at the Concert Noble in Brussels, Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2018.

The language of the United Nations resolution "calls on" rather than "forbids" Iran from testing its missiles, according to Trita Parsi, the president of the National Iranian American Council.

"We have been warning the world for some time that we are accumulating risk of a regional conflict if we do not deter Iran's missile testing and proliferation", he said.

Multiple political parties demand invite to TV debate on Brexit
The deal must still be approved by the United Kingdom parliament in early December, the result of which remains uncertain. Theresa May defended her Brexit deal, criticising the Labour Party's approach to Brexit.

US Strategic Command tracked the Iranian missile test using a satellite network that traces ballistic missile launches, a senior administration official told CNN.

"Under President Trump, we are not abandoning worldwide leadership or our friends in the global system".

Actually, that was one of the biggest deficiencies in the nuclear deal - that it didn't cover Iran's ballistic missile program.

"It is a grave and escalating threat, and nations around the world, not just Europe, need to do everything they can to be targeting Iran's missile program", he said.

Hook said United States discussions with the Europeans about missile sanctions are gaining traction.

Several EU countries have denounced the recent U.S. sanctions, however, and continue to work to preserve the 2015 nuclear deal, even though they have also criticised Iranian positions on other matters. He is also due to meet the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, in Brussels.

Pompeo said the Trump administration is "boldly reasserting" the kind of US leadership that helped create the worldwide organizations underpinning the global order since the end of World War II.

The U.S. has come into confrontation with Russian Federation over its alleged breach of a 1987 nuclear arms treaty, which banned nuclear and conventional missiles with ranges of 310 miles to 3,417 miles.

On Sunday, the regime-aligned Tasnim news agency quoted Brig.
