GOP Rep. Shrugs Off Khashoggi Assassination: ‘Journalists Disappear All Over The Country’

U.S. senators more certain than ever Saudi crown prince was behind Khashoggi killing

After a closed-door briefing by CIA Director Gina Haspel, two United States senators said they have "zero doubt" that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) ordered or at least knew about the operation to kill Saudi critic Jamal Khashoggi.

Jamal Khashoggi was reportedly tortured, murdered and then dismembered via a bone saw by Saudi operatives at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

As recently as Wednesday, Secretary of State and former CIA Director Mike Pompeo argued that the agency he used to head found "no direct reporting" that linked Mohammed to the murder as he urged senators not to advance a measure that would cut USA support for Saudi Arabia's military campaign in Yemen, which has drawn further scrutiny in the wake of Khashoggi's death.

The senator also says he can not support arms sales to Saudi Arabia so long as the crown prince is in charge.

"You have to be wilfully blind not to come to the conclusion that this was orchestrated and organised by people under the command of MbS", Republican senator Lindsey Graham told reporters, referring to the Crown Prince by his initials.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, told The Wall Street Journal on Monday that "no response is certainly not appropriate".

Sen. Bob Corker says a jury would find the Saudi crown prince 'in about 30 minutes.'

Senate responds to Trump's support of Saudi Arabia with a bill that would pull USA support from Saudi-led forces fighting in Yemen; Lt. Col.

Trump has said it's unknowable whether the Crown Prince was actually behind it - despite the Central Intelligence Agency concluding this with "high confidence" - while Pompeo said last week that there was no "direct reporting" implicating him. Pompeo said there was "no direct reporting" connecting the crown prince to the murder, and Mattis said there was "no smoking gun" making the connection.

He said he was working with colleagues on how to amend the resolution, and he had not had suggestions from the Trump administration on how it might prefer to proceed.

"If they were in a Democratic administration", Graham said of Pompeo and Mattis, "I would be all over them for being in the pocket of Saudi Arabia". Bob Corker, chair of the Foreign Relations Committee, adding that if it were a murder case sent to a jury, "he would be convicted in 30 minutes".

Senators were upset that Haspel did not appear with Mattis and Pompeo, which led to Tuesday's session. "But a complete fracture with Saudi Arabia, in my view, is not in our best interests".

Still, the agency later agreed to do an additional briefing with a select group of senators. Graham has also pushed for the Magnitsky Act sanctions issued against the 15 assassins to be extended to the crown prince as well. "We're with Saudi Arabia. Of course it does, and yet we have to have a relationship with these individuals- or with these countries".
