Former American President George H W Bush was a leading statesman at a critical juncture of world history and passionate about strong Indo-US relations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said December 1.

"The Palace is deeply saddened by the news of the passing of former President George Herbert Walker Bush of the United States of America", Palace Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement.

In April, he was admitted to a hospital intensive care unit with a blood infection, a week after the death of his wife of 73 years, Barbara.

He died "at home in Houston surrounded by family and close friends", family spokesman Jim McGrath told AFP.

One thing that Palazhchenko said distinguished Bush from other USA presidents was his understanding of Gorbachev's political situation, and a professed desire not to put Gorbachev in a corner at a time when others in the Soviet leadership were not thrilled with rapprochement.

The Obamas, in a statement, said Bush's life was "a testament to the notion that public service is a noble, joyous calling".

In his post-presidency, Bush turned to philanthropy - he joined forces with Bill Clinton to raise funds for victims of the 2004 Asian tsunami and the 2010 Haiti quake.

Actress and television host Ellen DeGeneres said: "I will never forget George H.W. Bush and President Clinton meeting me in my old hometown of New Orleans to show support and raise money after Hurricane Katrina".
