Michael Cohen's lawyers ask for no prison time

Michael Cohen

The document is typically written up by a defendant's attorneys before a client is sentenced in order to direct the attention of a judge to the facts and circumstances surrounding that client and his/her conduct prior to sentencing. They also asserted Cohen orchestrated illegal campaign contributions in the form of payments to alleged Trump mistresses in order to protect the former real estate mogul. This likely indicates that they feel his cooperation is very valuable to investigators.

"When I heard his plea included information about keeping Donald Trump's kids up to speed, I have to say - we've heard this before - but I was thinking to myself, "lordy, I hope there are tapes" because we don't know what Michael Cohen has been taping but we may hear more about that in the future", he said.

The lawyers said in court papers filed in NY late Friday that Cohen, 52, has cooperated extensively with special counsel Robert Mueller and NY state investigators who brought a civil lawsuit against the Trump Organization and individuals, including Trump.

Manafort's lawyers, who deny that Manafort lied, will have an opportunity to respond and a judge is expected to hear arguments before deciding whether he breached his plea deal. The entire document can be read below.

The memo disclosed that Cohen also had met voluntarily with investigators from the New York Attorney General's Office regarding a lawsuit it has brought against Trump and his foundation. He told The Associated Press that while in contact with Mueller's team, he directed his lawyer to informally share information with Trump's attorneys, including Jay Sekulow.

Michael Cohen's lawyers made the request a day after his dramatic appearance in federal court, where he admitted he lied to Congress about the Trump Organization's effort to build a Moscow tower. "He could have fought the government and continued to hold the party line, positioning himself perhaps for a pardon or clemency, but, instead - for himself, his family and his country - he took personal responsibility for his own wrongdoing and contributed, and is prepared to contribute, to an investigation that he views as thoroughly legitimate and vital".

In a series of tweets, Mr Trump said the deals were "very legal", he put up "zero money" and abandoned the project.

Cohen told two congressional committees past year that the talks about the tower project ended in January 2016, a lie he said was an act of loyalty to Trump.

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort may face additional charges after lawyers in the special counsel's Russian Federation investigation said he lied to them and broke his plea agreement, prosecutors said Friday.

Thursday's charges were handled by Mueller, not the federal prosecutors in NY who handled Cohen's previous guilty plea in August to other federal charges involving his taxi businesses, bank fraud and campaign work for Trump.

In Cohen's cooperation agreement with the special counsel's office, it notes that Cohen will not be prosecuted for "obstructing" or conspiring to obstruct or commit perjury "before congressional or grand jury investigations".

On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, displayed what he said were two emails from Cohen asking for help getting the Trump Tower Moscow project off the ground. They also argue Cohen is cooperating even though Trump reportedly suggested in private he is willing to pardon associates ensnared in the special counsel's probe. "Michael had a lengthy substantive conversation with the personal assistant to a Kremlin official following his outreach in January 2016, engaged in additional communications concerning the project as late as June 2016, and kept [Trump] apprised of these communications", his attorneys wrote, adding, "He and [Trump] also discussed possible travel to Russian Federation in the summer of 2016, and Michael took steps to clear dates for such travel".

In another, a woman wrote that her husband, who is Syrian, had been friends with Cohen since 1984.

Manafort faces up to five years in prison on each charge in his plea agreement.
