River-Boca to be played outside Argentina

Boca Juniors fans gather outside the hotel where their team is staying in Buenos Aires Argentina

It had been hoped that the final of the South American equivalent of the Champions League, the first between Argentina's most famous clubs, could be completed on Sunday, but Boca asked for another postponement, as some of their players were still suffering from the after-effects of the tear gas.

The postponed Copa Libertadores final second leg between bitter Buenos Aires rivals Boca Juniors and River Plate is now slated to take place the weekend of December 8-9 in a location to be determined outside of Argentina, CONMEBOL authorities determined on Tuesday.

River fans attacked the Boca team bus ahead of Saturday's game, with Boca captain Pablo Perez and midfielder Gonzalo Lamardo taken to nearby hospitals. The first leg was drawn 2-2.

River President Rodolfo D'Onofrio said his club can't be blamed for public security breaches, and accused his Boca counterpart Daniel Angelici of breaking his word after promising to play.

The kick-off time was initially delayed before the game was postponed from Saturday to Sunday.

Pres. Trump defends border agents for using tear gas
US President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Sunday to express his displeasure with the caravans in Mexico. That has instilled a sense of desperation among many after their grueling trek from Central America.

"We do not accept to play any match until the court decides and we do not agree that dates have been set because we are not ready to play a final", he said after the meeting at Conmebol's headquarters.

"It can't be that a River-Boca will not be played [there] because some people caused a disaster", he said.

Boca striker Carlos Tevez hit out at CONMEBOL and said if the same scenario had occurred at their La Bombonera stadium, River would have been awarded the win.

"Our city, which historically, culturally and through sport, is close to Buenos Aires, feels a deep-rooted link to your two prestigious clubs founded by our countrymen who emigrated from Italy to Argentina in the early 1900s, and today twinned to our two clubs Genoa and Sampdoria", a letter addressed to the presidents of the two clubs by Genoa deputy mayor Stefano Anzalone read.

However, Argentine football was disgraced after River fans threw stones and missiles at the Boca bus as it made its way to the stadium, breaking windows and injuring players.
