Pilot of doomed Lion Air flight 'fought continuously' against malfunctioning computers

Reports: Readings show Lion Air pilots struggled with Boeing 737 system before crash

The new 737 MAX 8 plunged into the Java Sea on October 29, killing all 189 people on board.

The document reveals pilots had repeatedly reported to the Jakarta Air Traffic Control (ATC) the aircraft was experiencing "flight control problem" asking for the aircraft's altitude as they struggled to steady the plane.

The report provided new recommendations to Lion Air on safety on top of earlier recommendations about the flight manual that have already been implemented by Boeing.

However, Lion Air's safety record does come into question in the 78-page report, which says the plane was not airworthy. The system forced the front of the plane to turn down as the pilots fought to keep it up. The crew disabled the aircraft's electric stabilizer trim and continued the flight, with the first officer flying on what the crew deemed to be more reliable instruments.

Searchers have not found the plane's cockpit voice recorder, which would provide more information about the pilots' actions. The captain was using his controls to bring the plane's nose up, but an automated anti-stall system was pushing it down.

The pilots made attempts to regain control of the aircraft, but investigators said they did not hit two cutoff switches that would have deactivated the automated system - as was done by pilots on the plane's previous flight. The captain's stick shaker activated shortly after takeoff and remained nearly continuously active.

"This condition is considered un-airworthy" and the flight should have been "discontinued".

Parts of an engine of the ill-fated Lion Air flight JT 610 are recovered from the sea during search operations in the Java Sea.

The flight, a Lion Air Boeing 737 jet, crashed while travelling between Bali and the Indonesian capital of Jakarta.

"It's not something you ever want to have happen as a pilot", he said.

Indonesia's aviation safety record has improved since its airlines, including national carrier Garuda, were subject to years-long bans from United States and European airspace for safety violations, although the country has still recorded 40 fatal accidents over the past 15 years. "It is too early to conclude". Boeing also pointed to maintenance work and procedures that had failed to fix the aircraft's repeated problems.

The same anti-stall system had activated on the jet during a flight the previous evening, but the pilots, in that case, managed to shut off the system, Nurcahyo said. Jagged lines in graphs contained in a preliminary report crash investigators are preparing to release Wednesday show the airplane's nose being pushed down at least two dozen times, the pilots pulling it back up each time, before its final, fatal nose-dive into the Java Sea.

Investigators are exploring whether faulty sensor data might have caused the automatic system to kick in and force the plane's nose down.

Lemme said he was troubled that the pilots of the plane were not warned about the problems of earlier flights.

Indonesian regulators were urged after previous accidents to improve their oversight of maintenance and pilot training.

The 737 Max is a new version of Boeing's original 737 and has become its fastest selling plane. It had still to be determined how much, if at all, the plane design would be faulted, the source told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

They also asked Lion Air to update its operational manuals in order to improve the airline's "safety culture".

"We haven't found the information in the manual relevant to the new feature to the 737- MAX, related to the feature for the stall prevention system", he said. "At the moment I don't have the answer", said the NTSC's Utomo. What procedures did they carry out.

Without it, he said there would be "a lot of guessing".
