Former NRL player Jarryd Hayne has been charged over the alleged sexual assault of a woman in NSW.

He was placed under arrest and charged with a single count of "aggravated sexual assault - cause actually bodily harm to victim", an offence which carries a maximum of 20 years jail.

Hayne was interviewed by detectives from the New South Wales Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad over an alleged incident with a woman in the Hunter Valley in September.

Hayne had finished his current contract at the Parramatta Eels on October 31, however the club said they were continuing to provide welfare support.

Hayne began his career with the Paramatta Eels in 2006 but left to play in America's National Football League in 2015.

He's also been forced to surrender his passport and is banned from any global airports and is due to appear at Burwood Local Court on December 10.

He has played 214 NRL games since his 2006 debut, 191 with the Eels. 'The man has been granted strict conditional bail to appear at Burwood Local Court on Monday 10 December 2018.
