Turkey shares tape of Khashoggi’s killing

Jamal Khashoggi's fiancée Hatice Cengiz in London on 29 October 2018

No trace of Khashoggi's remains has turned up, even as the 59-year-old journalist's sons appealed on the US television news network CNN on Sunday for the Saudis to return his body so he can be buried in the major Islamic pilgrimage city of Medina with the rest of his family.

A Turkish official said last week that Saudi Arabia sent two people, a chemist and a toxicologist, to Istanbul a week after Khashoggi's October 2 killing to erase evidence, calling it a sign that top Saudi officials knew of the crime.

Yasin Aktay, an advisor to Erdogan, suggested last week that the body may have been dissolved.

A Turkish official said two members of a Saudi Arabian team were sent to the consulate to cover up evidence shortly after his death there.

"Turkey has not given a voice recording to Pompeo or any other American official", Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said.

"We gave the recordings, we gave them to Saudi Arabia, we gave them to Washington, to the Germans, to the French, to the English", he said in a televised speech.

"They (Saudi officials) also listened to the conversations and they know".

As Turkey has increased pressure on the Saudis through leaks to the news media on the gruesome killing, Saudi Arabia has been forced to shift its story.

To avoid having the problem repeat, pilots may deactivate the stabilizer trim system, according to The Air Current's explanation. One of the pilots had trimmed the plane to push the nose down while trying to climb after aborting a landing, the report said.

Turki said he expects the kingdom to live up to its promise "to put all of the facts on the table" and answer questions including what happened to Khashoggi's body.

Turkish officials reportedly played the tapes for Central Intelligence Agency director Gina Haspel when she visited Turkey late last month but USA officials have not commented on her briefing with President Donald Trump after her return to Washington.

Erdogan, who was heading to France to attend commemorations marking the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, has accused the "highest levels" of the Saudi government of ordering the hit.

Last week, however, Turkey said he had been strangled immediately after entering the consulate and his body dismembered "in accordance with plans made in advance".

A Turkish official, speaking on condition of anonymity, previously told MEE that the audio recordings were unlikely to ever be publicly released.

"There's no need to distort this issue, they know for certain that the killer, or the killers, is among these 15 people".

The Turkish leader also said Mujeb refused to cooperate with the investigation when he visited Istanbul.

During a phone call with President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and national security adviser John Bolton, Prince Mohammed said Khashoggi had been a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, a transnational Islamist organisation, according to the Washington Post. Saudi Arabia only allowed Turkish police to search the building on October 15.
