Wildfire Destroys Entire Town As Massive Blazes Tear Through California

Evacuations ordered in Northern California as fast-moving wildfire spreads

That assessment was echoed by Scott McLean, a spokesperson for CALFIRE, who told the Los Angeles Times that the Camp Fire "has destroyed the town".

The Butte County Sheriff's Office said Friday the victims were found in the same area in the town of Paradise, near a main thoroughfare heading out of town that was consumed by flames.

"The preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were located in vehicles that were overcome by the Camp Fire", said a statement, adding that they had yet to be identified. Around 52,000 people have been forced to evacuate in Northern California, and more than 100,000 in Southern California.

Allana Hall said this marks the second time she has fled a California fire. "We know that there have been injuries and we know there has been loss of life".

Only a day after it began, the blaze near the town of Paradise had grown to almost 110 square miles (285 square kilometers), and investigators found the dead in vehicles that were torched by the flames. The fire is expected to move north and critical fire conditions are expected Saturday.

The National Weather Service issued red-flag warnings for fire dangers in many areas of the state, saying low humidity and strong winds were expected to continue through Friday evening.

Firefighters had contained five percent of blaze. The cause is still being investigated.

Firefighters scramble to setup hose lines during the Woolsey Fire in Thousand Oaks. "As it burned, it was able to get into an area where winds started to push it, and pushed it towards the Paradise area through a community called Concow, and jumped a canyon". Cars and trucks, some with trailers attached, were left on the roadside as evacuees ran for their lives, said Bass, the police officer.

Multiple fatalities have been reported but it's not yet clear how many people might be dead.

"We grabbed our animals and some food and some clothes and we're getting the heck out of here", one man said.

Shari Bernacett said her husband tried to get people to leave the Paradise mobile home park they manage. Then she reconsidered, thinking: "I'm really scared".

The fire started at about 6.30am yesterday morning and reached 5,000 acres in three hours, fueled by high winds but by late afternoon today, the fire had stretched to more than 20,000 acres.

The entire town was ordered evacuated, setting off a desperate exodus in which many motorists got struck in gridlocked traffic and abandoned their vehicles to flee foot. Pay attention to evacuation information, follow very closely all of the public safety social media.

This story is developing and will be updated. "Pay very close attention".
