King tours Saudi as Khashoggi crisis rages abroad

The killing has already severely tarnished Saudi Arabia’s global reputation.— File

Turkey said last week that Khashoggi, a USA -based journalist who had written columns for The Washington Post that were critical of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was strangled as soon as he entered the consulate, his body dismembered and then destroyed, possibly dissolved in acid.

While Saudi Arabia's description of what happened to the elder Khashoggi has shifted several times, Turkish officials have said he was strangled shortly after he entered the Istanbul consulate and his body was dismembered.

Saudi Arabia told the United Nations on Monday it would prosecute those responsible for the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at its Istanbul consulate, and defended its human rights record.

Sabah identified the two men as Ahmed Abdulaziz al-Jonabi and Khaled Yahya al-Zahrani, saying they arrived in Turkey as part of an 11-person team sent to carry out the inspections with Turkish officials.

Initially, Saudi Arabia said Khashoggi walked out of the consulate and that his whereabouts were unknown, then that he died in a fist fight and still later that he had died in a chokehold.

The murder has tainted the global image of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman - the king's 33-year-old son and heir apparent - even though the kingdom strongly denies he was involved.

More than a month after Khashoggi was killed inside the mission on October 2, Turkey has still yet to recover the remains amid claims that his body was dissolved in acid.

The United States delegation condemned what it called Khashoggi's "premeditated killing" in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

In an interview with CNN last week, Khashoggi's sons, Salah and Abdullah, appealed for the return of their father's body to be buried in his birthplace in Medina, Saudi Arabia.

Thousands of Twitter users in Saudi Arabia have pushed for the boycott of Amazon.com and its regional subsidiary to slam the Washington Post for covering the assassination of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi; the Washington Post is owned by Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos.

Salah and Abdullah Khashoggi said the past weeks had been very hard and full of uncertainty for the entire family, adding that without their father's body, they would be unable to grieve.

"I really hope that whatever happened wasn't painful for him, or it was quick", he added. "It's an ongoing investigation", he said.

Trump's comments about Saudi incompetence are another indication that the USA is turning the heat on Riyadh since the killing of Washington Post journalist, Jamal Khashoggi.

They described their father as "courageous, generous, and very fearless", and they said they still had faith in the Saudi king to bring their father's killers to justice.
