Blackburn wins Tennessee Senate race over Bredesen

A conservative firebrand and a regular on cable TV news, Blackburn had campaigned as a committed Trump ally, even more so than many other Republican candidates this year. Back in October, Swift made a rare political statement on Instagram in which she encouraged fans to vote and said, "I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate".

The Democrats won't be picking up a Senate seat in Tennessee.

But those advantages didn't extend to Blackburn, who had a 48 percent approval rating, according to that poll - 5 points lower than Bredesen.

In a lengthy post on Instagram about a month before the election, Swift said she could not support Blackburn because of her record of voting against women and the LGBT community. Swift's pick for U.S. Representative, Jim Cooper, won his race against Jody Ball with 67.8 percent of the vote, though, helping the Democrats to gain control of the House.

Swift's endorsement of the candidates came after the 28-year-old singer remained politically silent throughout her career. "I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent".

Afterward though, she managed to consolidate support across the GOP's various political circles, including from former U.S. Rep. Stephen Fincher, who briefly opposed her in the primary and called for Corker to run again upon dropping out of the race.

"I guess Tay-Tay didn't have that much sway-sway, and Blackburn's support for the Trump administray-stray eventually outweighed-weigh the president's support for higher teacher pay-pay at the end of the day-day", Colbert quipped.

"If you like whats going in Washington, and you like this sort of lines in the sand, take no prisoners, I'm not the guy".

On Tuesday night, she was happy to claim a piece of Tennessee history for women in the Senate. These are not MY Tennessee values. I am grateful she will join a Senate majority in Washington committed to putting America First.
