Divided America votes in midterms, seen as referendum on Trump's presidency

Some 250,000 jobs were created last month beating expectations

USA citizens will vote to select their preferred members of Congress, both for the House of Representatives and for the Senate, as well as state Governors and down-ballot positions such as local representatives and judges.

If the Democrats do get their hands on at least one of the two bodies that make up the US Congress it could have a significant impact on the next two years of Mr Trump's presidency.

Attacks on favorite Trump foes House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters were staples of Trump's closing message to voters as he argued that Democrats would plunge the country into Venezuela-like chaos. Pinellas County Democrats joined forces to cross campaign with Congressman Charlie Crist, Attorney General candidate Sean Shaw, Florida House District 69 candidate Jennifer Webb and Senate District 24 candidate Lindsay Cross. Millions more will vote Tuesday in what members of both parties consider a referendum on President Trump.

Should Democrats fail tomorrow, the argument about what kind of progressive party they should be will start again.

"Democrats want to invite caravan after caravan of illegal aliens to pour into our country". So despite getting burned by polls in 2016, I think it's safe to say we will likely see a Democrat-controlled House of Representatives by tomorrow morning. "No nation can allow its borders to be overrun".

In Miami, Florida International University political scientist Kathryn DePalo said: "It's really a base election". "There's electricity in the air like I haven't seen since '16", he said Monday. But more significantly, polls suggest that Trump will lose control of the House of Representatives in today's vote.

Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., likely would be elevated to chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee, where she now serves as ranking member.

Wolf, who has been meeting with Democrats in key swing states in recent months, explained that the Democrats have an advantageous path to a House majority, but the path in the Senate is "incredibly tough".

Hillary Clinton urged her 23.6 million followers on Twitter to get out and vote. "When you vote, Illinois, you can choose hope over fear", he said.

Voter turnout could be the highest for a midterm election in 50 years, experts predicted. He is already talking about making deals with Democrats on infrastructure, something that could leave Republicans on the sidelines.

One in 4 Americans lives in the 125 congressional districts where no party is widely seen having a lock on Tuesday's vote. Democratic Senate incumbents are up for re-election, for example, in North Dakota, West Virginia, and Montana - states Trump carried by 30 percentage points on average two years ago.

"The big picture is that midterm elections go against the president's party", noted John Fortier of the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington.

"I think we're going to do well in the House", he said of Tuesday's races.

Democrats sustained a net loss of 13 governorships under Obama, according to the Republican Governors Association. RealClearPolitics puts Trump's average approval at about 43 percent, with 53 percent disapproving.

Donald Trump is a factor for 65% of American voters - and of those, 39% said they oppose him versus only 26% in support. "That is particularly true when a president is unpopular, as this president is".

Federal and state officials have been working for almost two years to shore up the nation's election infrastructure from cyberattacks by Russians or others seeking to disrupt the voting process.

A slim Republican majority in the House would also present challenges, likely inflaming simmering intraparty disputes. As for governors' races, Georgia has one of the most closely watched races between Democrat Stacey Abrams, vying to be the first black woman ever elected governor in the country, and Republican Brian Kemp.

Trump, though, nearly assuredly will face an avalanche of investigations into his tax returns, his payments to adult-film star Stormy Daniels and his relationship with Russian Federation if Democrats win back the House - which comes with the much-coveted power to subpoena and launch congressional investigations.

But as he touched down in IN for the second leg of his final-day tour, even Trump conceded that the House may slip from his party's grasp.
