North Ogden Mayor Brent Taylor killed in Afghanistan

A NATO helicopter flies over the Resolute Support headquarters in Kabul

Another U.S. military member whose name was not immediately made public was wounded in Saturday's attack that killed Taylor, who died from wounds from small arms fire, military officials said.

Brent Taylor, a major with the Utah Army National Guard, was identified as the servicemember killed, according to a Facebook post by North Ogden City Councilman Phillip Swanson.

Taylor served as mayor and city administrator, as he felt he could save the city money by working two positions, said Johnson, who worked with Taylor on various community volunteering projects. Taylor served on the North Ogden City Council starting in 2009, and became mayor in 2013, according to his biography on the city website.

On Twitter, Utah Senator Orrin Hatch, (R), called Taylor "a hero to all of us".

Taylor's death was mourned by Utah Lieutenant Governor Spencer Cox, who wrote that the Afghan war "has once again cost us the best blood of a generation".

"In the coming days", Sen. "He was the personification of the love of God, family and country". Gen. Jefferson S. Burton of the Utah National Guard plan to speak with reporters at noon Sunday local time at the state Guard's headquarters, FOX 13 reported.

"I am heartbroken at the news that we lost one of our own today in Afghanistan and feel completely humbled by the service and the ultimate sacrifice offered by this fearless and selfless soldier". We must rally around his family. "It's bitter", Burton said. "I wish them all the comfort and courage to face the hard days ahead". "Service is really what leadership is all about". Taylor was the eighth American killed in action in the country this year.

Afghan policemen keep watch following an air strike from an Afghan military helicopter during ongoing clashes between Afghan security forces and militants near the Eid Gah Mosque in Kabul on August 21, 2018.

The gunman was reportedly a member of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces - whom Taylor was deployed to train and advise.

The statement, issued by officials with Operation Resolute Support - the main us and NATO-led training mission Afghanistan - declined to officially comment where the attack took place or what unit the attacker was attached to.

The NATO-led mission in Afghanistan said in a statement on Saturday that a US armed forces member was killed but did not identify him.

RS also said the incident was under investigation.

Friends of the Taylor family confirmed his death, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.
