Pittsburgh Funerals Continue as Trump Focuses on Protests and "Fake News"

Robert Bowers, the man accused of shooting 11 people and wounding several more at a Pittsburgh synagogue, pleaded not guilty and requested a jury trial.

Robert Bower on Thursday denied charges that include the murdering of 11 people, hate crimes and firearms offences.

Prosecutors say Bowers entered the Tree of Life Synagogue with multiple firearms, including Glock.357-caliber handguns and a Colt AR-15 rifle, and made statements expressing his desire to "kill Jews".

The Trumps were greeted on Tuesday by Rabbi Jeffrey Myers, who led them inside the temple, where the worst anti-Semitic attack in USA history unfolded on Saturday.

Authorities have not said whether Bowers - who was wounded during the gun battle with police responding to the synagogue - is cooperating with investigators or detailed what he may have told them.

The charges carry a possible death sentence, and the Justice Department has said previously that federal prosecutors in Pittsburgh had initiated the process to seek such a punishment.

He spoke little, and only said that he understood the charges against him, and that some of them could result in the death penalty.

Bowers remained jailed without bail.

Trump's visit comes on the same day as funerals began for the first of the 11 dead. He said President Trump was right to call the massacre an act of anti-Semitism, but he said Trump's words and actions in coming weeks and months will be the test of his sincerity.

President Trump is visiting Pittsburgh in the aftermath of the October 27 shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Squirrel Hill; approximately 1,000 people reportedly protested his visit because of his rhetoric.

The indictment, which was expected, was announced on the second day of a weeklong series of funerals for congregants who perished in the mass shooting at Tree of Life synagogue. They locked in place as no one yet knew if the shooting was part of a broader, coordinated attack on Jews.

As they arrived, a gathering protesters showed up chanting, "President Hate, leave our state!" and "Trump, renounce white nationalism now!"

The Simons were the "sweetest people you could imagine", a neighbor who lived next to them for almost 40 years said.

Richard Gottfried, 65, as well as married couple Sylvan Simon, 86, and Bernice Simon, 84, will be laid to rest Thursday.

Just minutes before the synagogue attack, the shooter apparently used social media to rage against HIAS, a Jewish organization that resettles refugees under contract with the US government.

Top congressional leaders from both political parties rejected invitations from Trump to join him in visiting.

"I do believe it would be best to put the attention on the families this week and if he were to visit, choose a different time", Peduto said.
