Jamal Khashoggi was strangled and then dismembered, Turkish prosecutor says

Jamal Khashoggi

Many observers, however, believe the 33-year-old heir to the Saudi throne's hand to be behind the murder, despite his claims to the contrary.

Khashoggi, a onetime Saudi insider and US resident who lived in self-imposed exile for nearly a year before his death, had written critically of the crown prince in columns for The Washington Post.

'He thought of the possibility of them capturing him. US President Donald Trump has also threatened "severe punishment" if it turns out he was killed, though he has declined to halt multi-billion dollar arms sales to Saudi Arabia, which analysts argue could be the most effective sanction.

The statement is the first public confirmation by a Turkish official that Khashoggi was strangled and dismembered after he entered the Saudi Consulate on October 2 to collect paperwork needed to marry his Turkish fiancee. He did not walk out of the consulate.

Khashoggi's death has escalated into a crisis for the world's top oil exporter, which at first denied any knowledge of, or role in, his disappearance four weeks ago. It recently acknowledged that Turkish evidence shows the killing was premeditated.

The two countries have announced a joint investigation of the journalist's killing in Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul, although Turkey has leaked evidence to the media in an apparent effort to pressure its regional rival over the crime committed by Saudi officials. Unnamed Saudi officials previously claimed that Khashoggi's body was wrapped up in some kind of fabric and given to a local Turkish co-conspirator. "I want justice to be served not only for those who murdered Jamal but those who ordered his murder".

"Who sent these 15 people?"

The senators, led by Marco Rubio, said they would use the Atomic Energy Act to block any US-Saudi nuclear agreements if Mr Trump did not cut off talks.

McCarthy also said he put little stock in any apparent internal venom toward Montgomery. Gurley made it clear that he doesn't give a damn about any of that, though.

Speaking in central London, she said the West is considered a stronghold of human rights and democracy so it should stand up to the killers of her husband-to-be.

Cengiz said Khashoggi's death had "left a void in (her) heart and soul", adding: "If only I knew what would happen, I would have entered the consulate myself. Let's not let money taint our conscience and compromise our values", she added. Jamal Khashoggi went missing on October 2.

Cengiz met Khashoggi in May at a conference in Istanbul and their relationship blossomed.

Mojeb's arrival in Istanbul was the latest step in a high-stakes investigation that could implicate members of the Saudi leadership and potentially reshape the region's politics.

Turkish law required that Khashoggi, who was divorced, provide proof that he did not have a wife and thus his trip to the consulate.

He also wrote that Mojeb was in pursuit of Khashoggi's phone, which the journalist handed to his Turkish fiancee before entering the consulate.

He said a ceasefire should take effect within 30 days.
