Al Roker Rips Megyn Kelly for Blackface Remarks on 'Today'

Don Lemon Rips Megyn Kelly: 'There Has Never Been a Time in Her 47 Years That Blackface Has Been Acceptable' - WATCH

NBC's Al Roker on Wednesday schooled colleague Megyn Kelly for her widely panned defense of putting on blackface for Halloween costumes. One of the great parts of sitting in this chair each day is getting to discuss different points of view.

NBC chose to air a repeat broadcast of "Megyn Kelly Today" - an nearly unheard-of maneuver in the realm of morning-news programming - as tensions between NBC News and anchor Megyn Kelly appeared to heighten, putting her future at the Comcast-owned network under a cloud.

"But what is racist?" Indeed, for a good chunk of the her program's run, Kelly has often pre-taped episodes to run when she was on a reporting assignment or otherwise unavailable. You truly do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface at Halloween or a black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween.

HuffPost reports the blackface discussion revolved around Real Housewives of NY cast member Luann de Lesseps.

"I want to begin with two words: I'm sorry", Kelly told her audience. Her one-hour morning show has never caught on with viewers, except for a brief bump when she aggressively covered reports about sexual misconduct, and Kelly was said to be unhappy with the amount of lighter material expected of a 9 a.m. show. Negotiations about the end date and other details are still underway, the person said. Kelly gave her two guests, Roland Martin Unfiltered host Roland Martin and PBS' Amy Holmes, much more time to speak than she usually does, and she listened respectfully as they explained why her comments were so hurtful.

One official said the local response was on par with a "war footing" as emergency workers tended to the dead and injured. Dozens were hit by the speeding Jalandhar-Amritsar express train, which failed to stop following the collision.

"Megyn indicated before this brouhaha that she wanted to move on before the end of the year in order to be involved in the presidential campaign coverage", the station source says.

The reference to political correctness in a discussion about blackface struck some critics as odd, along with the show's cameras panning over the audience giving her a standing ovation for almost 20 seconds.

"I can not believe the ignorance on this in 2018". "You have a responsibility to educate yourself on social issues @megynkelly".

In 2013, while she was still at Fox, she was involved in a heated debate over the ethnicity of Santa Claus.

Craig Melvin, the show's other Black news anchor, also slammed anyone who claimed the criticism was just over-sensitive political correctness. "I did understand the idea of: 'But I love this character! I look forward to continuing that discussion".
