Saudis say 'don't know where' Khashoggi's body is

White House

"Defending freedom of the press is a key priority for Finland", the tweet read.

Jubeir was the first senior Saudi official to speak on the record since the Saudis admitted on Saturday that Khashoggi was dead. The kingdom also said that 18 suspects were in custody and that intelligence officials had been fired.

Ever since he disappeared October 2, Saudi officials have repeatedly said that he left the consulate alive and that they had no information about his whereabouts or fate. Turkish investigators, however, say they have audio and video evidence which shows Mr Khashoggi was killed by a team of Saudi agents inside the consulate.

Although Riyadh said that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman had nothing to do with Khashoggi's death, that claim has been met with skepticism.

The disappearance of Khashoggi has provoked global criticism of Saudi Arabia's de-facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and convulsed the kingdom as it struggles to respond to increasing worldwide pressure to explain the journalist's fate. He also said the kingdom does not know what happened to Khashoggi's body after his death.

A Scottish Government spokeswoman said: "We share the widespread global concern following the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi, and in light of those concerns Scottish Development worldwide will not be proceeding with this particular appointment".

The crown prince has "now crossed a line and there has to be a punishment and a price paid for that", Corker said on CNN.

Another diplomat added: "The extension is an example of how we could be flexible to help the British side if they want it". Theresa May has insisted that any backstop must be time-limited, which the Irish Government has already ruled out.

He added, "I think we really need to discontinue our arms sales to Saudi Arabia and have a long and serious discussion about whether or not they want to be an ally or they want to be an enemy".

While some are calling for United States sanctions against Saudi Arabia, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said on Sunday that it is too early to discuss such measures "until we get further down the investigation and get to the bottom of what occurred".

In an interview with the Washington Post, Mr Trump said that "obviously there's been deception, and there's been lies".

Sheikh Abdullah concluded his statement by asking God Almighty to preserve the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, its leadership and people, and to protect them from any harm.

He said it was "a judgement call on the part of Senator Paul" that was "based in emotion" rather than fact.

The incident had threatened to create a diplomatic crisis with the US, which sees its alliance with Riyadh as the cornerstone of its Middle East policy, and Turkey, which has tenuous ties with Saudi Arabia.
