First lady’s plane lands safely after mechanical issue

Melania Trump's plane was forced to return to an airbase after a mechanical issue caused smoke to fill the cabin.

NBC reporter Peter Alexander tweeted: "Smoke and burning smell reported on Melania Trump's flight to Philadelphia after "mechanical issue", per pool".

They were brought wet towels and told to hold them over their faces if the smell became too strong.

The airplane returned to Joint Base Andrews, an air force facility used by the White House outside Washington, DC. She and the crew landed safely a short time later.

Within a few minutes the smoke and burning smell began to dissipate, according to the producer.
