Snowstorm kills nine climbers on Nepal peak

At least eight climbers killed on Nepal peak: officials

Gurung said a rescue team hoped to return to the camp on Sunday if conditions improved.

"A massive block of ice (serac), probably 100 metres (330 ft) tall, likely fell from the mountain along a gorge, sending strong winds that hit the camp, threw the climbers off a cliff edge and into a ravine", Paudyal told Reuters on Monday.

"Everything is gone, all the tents are blown apart".

Nine climbers-five South Koreans and four Nepalis-died at the Mt Gurja based camp in Myagdi district when a violent snowstorm devastated their camp.

Kim was well-known as the first South Korean to climb the world's 14 highest mountains.

He had achieved the feat five years ago without using extra oxygen.

At least seven mountaineers have been killed and two others are missing after their camp on a Himalayan peak in western Nepal was hit by a snowstorm, police said.

The team attempting Mount Gurja, a 7,193 metre-high (23,600-foot) peak, was led by Kim Chang-ho, a veteran of the sport who had set speed records on 14 of the world's highest mountains.

Options to Keep Healthy During This Year's Flu Season
We have information about the adjuvanted vaccine, similarly. "When you hit a certain age, your mindset changes", Samuels said. But health officials stress that getting a shot any time during flu season is better than not getting one at all.

The storm is the deadliest incident to hit Nepal's mountaineering industry since 18 people were killed at the Mount Everest base camp in 2015 in an avalanche triggered by a powerful quake.

Rescuers found the bodies of the South Korean climbing expedition scattered across the base camp amid the broken remains of their tents and equipment.

The previous year, 16 Sherpas were killed on Everest when an avalanche swept through the Khumbu Icefall.

According to the Himalayan Database, no-one has stood on Gurja's summit since 1996.

The South Korean team were planning to scale the mountain via a never-climbed route, according to the Korean Alpine Federation.

Santa Lama of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, who helped with coordinating the rescue, said since all nine people at the camp were killed and no surviving witnesses it was hard to say what exactly happened or when.

Mount Gurja sits in Nepal's Annapurna region and is rarely climbed because of the risky conditions.

Friday's storm was the deadliest incident in Nepal's mountaineering industry since 18 people were killed at Mount Everest base camp in 2015 in an avalanche triggered by a powerful quake.
