Trump wary of halting Saudi arms sales over journalist

The image taken from Turkey's Daily Sabah shows 15 Saudi operatives suspected of having killed Kamal Khashoggi upon his arrival at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul

Asked about a Washington Post report that U.S. intelligence had intercepted top Saudi officials discussing a plan to capture Khashoggi, Trump told Fox, "It would be a very sad thing".

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday demanded Saudi Arabia provide answers over the disappearance of Khashoggi.

Many renowned USA intellectuals also called on the Trump administration to pressure the Saudi government to shed light on the Khashoggi case. "I like them very much".

Even Donald Trump told reporters: "We can't let this happen".

These were the toughest comments coming out of the Trump administration since the mysterious disappearance of the journalist, who Turkish authorities suspect was abducted and murdered by the Saudis. His Turkish fiancée, Hatice Cengiz, who was waiting outside, said he never reappeared.

WASHINGTON ― The American president who has made a habit of calling news media "the enemy of the people" is now facing a possible outcome of his words: the disappearance, perhaps murder, of a Washington-based journalist at the hands of one of the president's closest allies.

"If it turns out to be what we all think it is today but don't know, but what we all think it is today, there will have to be significant sanctions placed at the highest levels", said Republican Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee, the panel chairman.

"In both calls, they asked for more details and for the Saudi government to be transparent in the investigation process", the White House said. Ali Bakeer, an expert on Middle Eastern affairs, told Daily Sabah that if the Saudis are responsible for killing or kidnapping Khashoggi, and the available evidence until now points to them, then this "barbaric" act should be met with a strong response not only from Turkey but also from the worldwide community and the U.S.in particular. "We'll see what happens when an American citizen who is not one of his supporters, or from a constituency that he is concerned about, is the victim".

The identity and the roles that most or all of them held in the Saudi government or security services are now known to the Turkish officials.

The US State Department announced Thursday that Saudi Ambassador to the US Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz had headed back home to get more information about the case.

It's not just my friends and I who dug it, though, as it's looking like fans across the world thought it lived up to the high expectations .

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said that the Saudi ambassador to the US was traveling to Saudi Arabia, and that the USA expects him to provide information about the Khashoggi case when he returns.

The New York Times reported that Turkish officials believe Kashoggi was killed inside the consulate, at the orders of Saudi Arabia's leadership.

Broadcast by Turkey's TRT World channel and apparently obtained from security cameras, the footage shows vehicles driving up to the consulate, including black vans thought to be central to inquiries.

However, the United States president has shown no real interest in tangling with the Saudis.

Khashoggi, 59, is a longtime leading Saudi journalist and former government advisor who went into exile last year after 33-year-old Prince Mohammed rose to power underneath his father the king.

Around the time Khashoggi entered the consulate, a second private plane from Riyadh took off for Istanbul.

The Washington Post contributor vanished last week while visiting the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. However, a police search revealed that they did not take the luggage on their return. One of the men is said to be a senior Saudi forensic official.

Sabah added that no "body parts" appeared on scans of the belongings of seven passengers of relevance to the case at Istanbul airport.

Those associations could become a political liability if Prince Mohammed is implicated in Khashoggi's disappearance. "If they have the ability and also the audacity to go into another country and kill a journalist, these aren't the kind of people maybe that we want to be selling arms to".
