Google+ leaked personal details, will be shut down

Google+ is officially shutting down

Google will gradually shut down the consumer version of its long-shunned social network Plus, after the search giant disclosed on Monday it had discovered a security lapse that may have exposed the personal information of up to 500,000 users.

Shares of its parent company Alphabet Inc, however, were down 1.5 percent at $1150.75 in response to what was the latest in a run of privacy issues to hit the United States' big tech companies. Those developers were granted access to user data including names, email addresses, birth dates, gender, profile photos, places lived, occupation and relationship status.

Google has worked to improve Google+ over the years with several notable updates ever since the social network first launched in 2011. According the WSJ, Google CEO Sundar Pichai both knew of and agreed with the decision not to plan to not disclose the data exposure. Google further stated that there was "no evidence" that the 438 developers that had access to the bug were aware of it or used it to access users personal info. The company said that "none of those thresholds were met".

Google is at the centre of controversy this morning over a report of a massive user data breach that occurred past year, with the result that they will be introducing finer grain controls to limit access to user data on the web and Android - and also shutdown Google+ for consumers. (See the full list on our developer site.) It does not include any other data you may have posted or connected to Google+ or any other service, like Google+ posts, messages, Google account data, phone numbers or G Suite content.

All of this has led Google to finally admit Google+ was a failure, with the company announcing that it will close over the next ten months with a pivot to the enterprise market in the cards.

Tropical Storm Michael forms; Fla. governor to declare emergency
ET, Tropical Storm Michael is located 90 miles south of Cozumel, Mexico and about 225 miles southwest of the western tip of Cuba. The "risk of risky storm surge, rainfall, and wind impacts continues to increase", the National Hurricane Center warned Sunday.

The company will begin to wind-down the network over a 10-month period, allowing users time to wipe their profiles clean and take down additional information.

The WSJ report and Google blog both agree that Google discovered the bug in spring of 2018, although the motivation for what happened afterwards differs.

The security flaw will mean the end of Google+ for consumers, the company said.

Google also says that it's limiting apps' ability to get your Call Log and SMS permissions on Android devices, allowing only an app that you've selected as your default calling and texting app to make these requests.

The company added that it chose to sunset the consumer version of Google+ due to the significant challenges in creating and maintaining it and its very low usage.
