Kim Yi Dionne from California tweeted that Melania Trump wearing a pith helmet on her trip to Africa was more than a silly sartorial choice.

Jason Burke explains in The Guardian that 19th century European explorers and imperial administrators in Africa, parts of Asia and the Middle East wore pith helmets, which were later incorporated into the uniforms of colonial military officers.

Trump's trip, which took her to Ghana and Malawi focused on children - one expressed objective of the trip was to highlight her "Be Best" initiative, which promotes "encouragement, kindness, compassion and respect" among kids.

She and her local counterpart Margaret Kenyatta held talks on the welfare of mothers and children, and conservation, according to the Kenyan presidency.

Back home, Washington was in turmoil, but the first lady had something on her mind.

Still, it was hard to overlook the disconnect between the goodwill Melania Trump exuded on her trip and the Trump administration's hard-edge approach to foreign aid.

The First Lady was photographed wearing a white pith helmet while on a safari in Nairobi National Park in Kenya.

She began her four-country tour of Africa on October 1 where she visited Ghana, Malawi, Kenya and Egypt.

She wore slacks and a tie as she stepped off the plane in Cairo, where she proceeded to the presidential palace, an ornate cream stone building with arabesque designs.

Washington has been gripped by high drama and emotion in recent days, from the testimony of Christine Blasey Ford - who accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault - to protests against his nomination which saw more than 300 arrests, including celebrities.

Melania Trump meets with Egyptian President Aabdah Fatal Al-Sisi and the first lady, during her final stop in her visit to Africa.

'I am honored to meet the honorable lady, the wife of the American president, in Cairo tomorrow, and to wish her a successful and happy stay in her second country, Egypt, ' she wrote in Arabic.

It didn't take long for the typically reserved US first lady to dive fully into the moment.

Ms. Trump has left Egypt in the late afternoon. "It is a handsome thing to see". Of the president, she added: "I never heard him saying those comments".
