Typhoon Trami injures 50, readies direct hit on Japan mainland

Kansai International Airport said it will close its two runways from 11 a.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday as the typhoon is expected to come closest to the airport, located on a man-made island in Osaka Bay.

Outlying islands in the Okinawan chain, some 1,000 km (621 miles) southwest of Tokyo, were being pounded by heavy rain and high tides a day before an Okinawan gubernatorial election on Sunday.

More than 185,000 homes and offices had power outages as of 9 p.m. on Sunday in the southern Kyushu region, according to Kyushu Electric Power Co., while about 118,000 buildings were without power in Okinawa as of 9:50 p.m. according to Okinawa Electric Power Co.

Typhoon Trami has already sparked travel disruption in the world's third-biggest economy, with bullet train services in the west of Japan suspended and nearly 1,000 flights cancelled due to the closure of a key airport hub.

A woman in her 60s went missing in Miyazaki prefecture, southern Japan, after she was washed away in a paddy irrigation channel, according to NHK. (JR East) announced Sunday that it would halt all train services in the Tokyo metropolitan area from 8 p.m. Sunday due to the approaching typhoon.

Trami has maximum gusts of 216 kilometres per hour and is forecasted to hit the mainland early Sunday and cause extreme weather across the country into Monday.

The typhoon was coming very close to the southern part of Kyushu in southern Japan in the morning of September 30 and was dumping torrential rain in the area.

More than 1,000 flights have been cancelled, affecting over 100,000 passengers.

The storm's huge eye was forecast to move near the city of Osaka before churning across the Japanese archipelago, likely hitting areas still recovering from extreme weather that has battered Japan in recent months.

"People in Okinawa are used to typhoons but we are strongly urging them to stay vigilant", he told AFP.

"Shinkansen" bullet train services, particularly those in western areas, also reduced or cancelled their services. It claimed 11 lives and shut down Kansai Airport.

Maintaining its "very strong force", the storm churned near Kagoshima on the western tip of Japan, causing seven minor injuries.
