Trump says FBI has 'free rein' in Kavanaugh investigation

Sen. Jeff Flake R-AZ speaks with Sen. Chuck Grassley R-IA Chairman during the Senate Judiciary Committee meeting

During testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on allegations of sexual assault leveled by accuser Christine Blasey Ford, Judge Brett Kavanaugh delivered an emotional denial and a stunning rebuke of the confirmation process, at times breaking down in tears.

Joining Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., onstage Saturday at the Global Citizens Festival in New York's Central Park, MSNBC reported Flake discussed how the personal relationship between the pairhelped show the "politics of compromise that prevailed" in the Senate Judiciary Committee's vote to delay a floor vote on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

At the hearing, Kavanaugh angrily and categorically denied assaulting Ford or any other woman.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said oversight of the investigation belonged to the Senate.

On Friday, September 28, the Senate Judiciary Committee formally asked the White House to order the FBI to carry out a supplemental background investigation, saying it should probe "current credible allegations" against the 53-year-old jurist, CNN reported.

Trump, who has been backing his candidate to the core and blamed the Opposition over the controversy, told the reporters here on his way to a rally in West Virginia that the probe agency is free to do whatever they have to.

"We can confirm the FBI has reached out to interview Ms. Ramirez and she has agreed to cooperate with their investigation".

At least three women have accused Kavanaugh, a federal appeals court judge, of years-ago misconduct.

Former FBI Director James Comey published an op-ed in The New York Times Sunday, schooling Republicans and President Donald Trump as they complain that the investigation can't be done properly and independently. "Actually, I want them to interview whoever they deem appropriate, at their discretion".

Oil Prices Reach Four-Year High After Producers Decline To Raise Output
In a tweet last week, United States president Donald Trump said that Opec "must get prices down now!" by raising global output. With prices hovering at around $80 a barrel for Brent crude, Trump has leaned on OPEC to increase supplies.

A third woman, Julie Swetnick, accused Kavanaugh and his high school friend Mark Judge of excessive drinking and inappropriate treatment of women in the early 1980s, among other accusations.

Democratic challenger Tom Malinowski says the issue goes beyond whether Kavanaugh should be on the court. Jeff Flake, a moderate Republican who surprised colleagues by announcing his support for Kavanaugh early Friday only to call for further investigation a few hours later.

Trump says in a statement that the updated investigation, which comes in response to sexual misconduct allegations, "must be limited in scope" and "completed in less than one week".

In a tweet on Saturday night, Trump sought to deny news reports that he was limiting the scope of the FBI investigation.

Supreme court nominee Brett Kavanaugh testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, Sept. 27, 2018. Ford claims that Keyser and Smyth were present at the gathering when the alleged assault happened, and that Judge was eyewitness to it. "You see what's happening right now", Trump said.

"I'm sorry that this bad thing happened to her at the hands of someone", Conger said. "You're telling me that my assault doesn't matter, that what happened to me doesn't matter and you're going to elect people who do these things into power". Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee said last week they interviewed two men who said they might have had the encounter with Ford that she described, but no Republican senator has lent any credence to those claims.

But she expressed confidence that no new information will be uncovered, noting the allegations did not surface during the judge's six prior background checks for positions in the executive and judicial branches of government. "I think you give a little leeway there".

Round, of Vermont, said she feels the whole episode could end up hurting Democrats more than helping them in this fall's elections, just more than a month away.

"I have been unable to get all the information necessary regarding this nomination, despite my best efforts", said Donnelly in a written statement.
