Dog rescued from hurricane flooding

Scenes from Hurricane Florence making landfall on the United States' east coast

That's about 220 miles from Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, where Florence made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane at 7:15 a.m. September 14, coming ashore along a mostly boarded-up, emptied-out stretch of coastline. Florence had been a Category 3 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale with 120-mph winds as of Thursday, but dropped to a Category 1 hurricane before coming ashore.

There were no immediate reports of any deaths. In all, the storm led to the loss of life of 11 in the Tar Heel State and three in the Palmetto State.

Authorities have confirmed those storm-related deaths, including a mother and her infant child who died after a tree fell on their home in New Hanover County, where the storm hit Friday morning with a 105 miles per hour wind gust, the strongest wind in the city since 1958.

According to a report from the J.P. Morgan Chase Institute, extreme weather events like the one now battering the Carolinas and Virginia can have far-reaching effects on consumers' wallets, impacting their spending for months after the storm has cleared.

Major portions of the Carolinas were drenched and authorities warned of continuing danger. The United States Geological Survey predicted before the storm went ashore that about three-quarters of the beaches in North Carolina would be eroded. We got thrown into mailboxes. Dozens of people were rescued from a collapsing hotel in North Carolina.

Florence is menacing the USA coast just as Supertyphoon Mangkhut is threatening to spur chaos in parts of Asia. But it was clear that this was really about the water, not the wind.

In New Bern, N.C., the city announced Saturday night 455 people were rescued from their flood-swamped homes.

More than 20,000 people are meanwhile taking refuge in emergency shelters.

Kevin Futrell used a boat to help people escape the flooded River Hills subdivision. We see it happen in New Orleans and other areas.

"The father was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with injuries". River flooding may be worse than Hurricane Floyd in 1999.

"This rainfall will produce catastrophic flash flooding and prolonged, significant river flooding", the hurricane center said. It will become a remnant low as it moves near OH and West Virginia.

The coastal town of New Bern, North Carolina, wasn't hit head-on by Tropical Storm Florence, but it was hit hard, with flooding that trapped people in their homes and prompted 455 rescues, a city spokeswoman said Saturday.

The White House said President Donald Trump would visit the storm-ravaged region in the coming days, but only after it is determined his arrival would not disrupt continuing rescue and recovery efforts. This designation will allow grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-priced loans to cover uninsured property losses as well as other aid for homeowners and business owners. It came as rivers swelled, tides crested and the rain wouldn't stop.

In 2016, the city was submerged from Hurricane Matthew.

The area is also experiencing some power outages.

'If you are refusing to leave during this mandatory evacuation, you need to do things like notify your legal next of kin because the loss of life is very, very possible, ' Mayor Mitch Colvin said at a news conference.

In North Carolina, rivers rose to record levels and more people have been asked to evacuate as authorities worry another round of flooding could come in the next few days.

Carolinas residents without power continued to decline.

The eye of the storm reached Wrightsville Beach, several miles east of Wilmington, at around 7:15 a.m. eastern time (1215 GMT), with the estimated maximum wind of 150 km/h.

It was downgraded further to a tropical depression on Sunday morning.
